Agricultural plastics are currently characterised by a predominantly linear take-make-dispose value chain, thus being a major stream of waste that contributes to significant environmental and economic issues. Therefore, policy makers have recently indicated the adoption of circular economy approaches as the way forward for plastics. This study addresses the problem of agricultural plastic waste as a major stream of landfilled waste by assessing the potential for recycling the plastic into higher value products through pyrolysis and by optimally designing the respective supply network to support this process. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is developed to optimise the end-to-end supply network design, from the waste generation stage up to the end consumer of the produced material. The model is supported by experimental results on the pyrolysis performance for contaminated plastic samples. The model is applied in a case study of the Scottish agricultural sector to showcase its potential in assessing the feasibility and financial viability in addition to the positive environmental impact on agricultural plastic waste supply networks. The results demonstrate the potential of using the pyrolysis technology for agricultural plastic waste recycling as an example of a circular economy approach and the benefits of using the developed model for decision making purposes, as well as the potential for waste reduction and the implications for farmers' operations. Reverse supply network design for circular economy pathways of wind turbine blades in Europe

Athanasios Rentizelas, Nikoletta Trivyza, Sarah Oswald, Stefan Siegl

Summary: Wind energy installations are increasing rapidly, leading to a rise in end-of-life waste from wind turbine blades. This study explores the feasibility of mechanical recycling to reuse these blades in composite material manufacturing, optimizing the required supply network design for both 2020 and 2050 in Europe. Findings suggest a semi-decentralised optimal network design with a focus on areas with higher availability of end-of-life blades to reduce system-wide costs.

The role of biochar particle size and hydrophobicity in improving soil hydraulic properties

Ifeoma Gloria Edeh, Ondrej Masek

Summary: The study examined how biochar particle size and hydrophobicity impact soil water movement and retention. Results showed that hydrophobicity increased with smaller particle sizes, leading to reduced water retention capacity. Fine biochar particles decreased hydraulic conductivity, while coarse particles increased water retention due to hydrophilic surfaces and increased intraporosity.

Gamifying situated learning in organisations

Agnessa Spanellis, Igor Pyrko, Viktor Dorfler

Summary: Gamification has attracted significant interest in management studies, amplified by digital technologies and augmented reality's pervasive nature in how people work and learn socially. The affordances of gamified tools impact human relations in practice, yet the dynamics between gamification and situated learning have not been thoroughly explored. Introducing a model of gamifying situated learning in organizations can enhance community-building and networking, bridging physical distances and blending social learning into the gamified altered reality.

Composition of PAHs in Biochar and Implications for Biochar Production

Wolfram Buss, Isabel Hilber, Margaret C. Graham, Ondrej Masek

Summary: The relationship between biomass feedstock, production process parameters, and the speciation of PAHs in biochar is crucial. It was found that the design of the pyrolysis unit plays a more significant role in determining the PAHs content in biochar than specific pyrolysis parameters or feedstocks.

Optimizing the Design of a Biomass-to-Biofuel Supply Chain Network Using a Decentralized Processing Approach

Fragkoulis Psathas, Paraskevas N. Georgiou, Athanasios Rentizelas

Summary: When designing biomass-to-biofuel supply chains, it is important to consider the uncertainty, seasonality, and geographical dispersion of biomass. This study presents a novel methodology that optimizes the design of biofuel supply chains using a decentralized network structure. The model takes into account variable biomass yield profiles and mobile fast pyrolysis technology. The results of a case study in Scotland revealed that storage capacity plays a crucial role in expanding the operational time window of processing facilities, while relocation costs have a minor impact on transportation costs.

Sustainable production of lignocellulosic bioethanol towards zero waste biorefinery

Jixiang Zhang, Athanasios Rentizelas, Xiaolei Zhang, Jun Li

Summary: This study proposes a novel process design for converting lignocellulosic biomass into ethanol with zero waste generation. It demonstrates the feasibility and profitability of producing ethanol while converting waste streams into high value-added by-products. The results show that co-production of by-products can significantly decrease the minimum viable sales price of ethanol and that the price of lignin has a significant impact on the profitability. Additionally, the study suggests that the proposed process can avoid water pollution through water recycling, but there is a trade-off between reduced water pollution and increased CO2 emissions when fossil fuel is used as the energy source.
