Summary: Producing biodiesel by transesterification of waste oils or fats with short-chain alcohol can alleviate energy and environmental issues, and reducing the cost of transesterification catalyst is crucial for enhancing biodiesel competitiveness. In this work, a novel calcium oxide-cancrinite based catalyst was prepared from a calcium-rich residue obtained through one-step pyrolysis of paper mill sludge. The hydrothermal condition of the sludge slightly affected the yield of fatty acid methyl ester, while the pyrolysis temperature significantly influenced the transesterification performance. Optimization of key process parameters achieved a yield of over 95% for fatty acid methyl ester.
