Summary: This review paper comprehensively discusses the management and research aspects of e-waste in an Asian developing country. The lack of effective management and recycling systems in Vietnam has resulted in localized contamination and human exposure to toxic chemicals. Primitive processing activities have been identified as significant contributors to environmental emissions and human exposure to toxic elements and pollutants. Informal e-waste processing releases pollutants at similar levels as large-scale facilities in developed countries.

Summary: The co-occurrence of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the environment of informal waste processing areas in Vietnam was investigated in this study. The results showed higher levels of HFRs and OPEs in the e-waste recycling workshops compared to the vehicle processing workshops, suggesting different usage patterns of these substances in different industries. The human health risk related to HFRs and OPEs in settled dust was found to be low.

Summary: Measuring personal exposure to flame retardants (FRs) is crucial for assessing and controlling human health risks posed by FRs during the recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) and end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). The study examined the use of handwipes and silicone wristbands to measure personal FR exposure for e-waste and ELV recycling workers and their children in Vietnam. The results showed that both handwipes and wristbands can effectively measure FR exposure, and similar FR profiles were found in both workers and their children.

Summary: In Asian developing countries, undeveloped and ineffective sewer systems are causing surface water pollution by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), posing risks to freshwater fauna. This study aimed to assess the contamination status, bio-accumulation, and potential risks of PPCP residues in surface water and freshwater fish from three Asian countries. Results showed that bioaccumulation factors measured in fish and water samples were in close agreement for the majority of compounds, but certain species-specific differences were observed. The presence of certain PPCPs in fish plasma and surface water indicated potential adverse effects on wild fish and high ecological risks on Asian freshwater ecosystems.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
