Summary: This study investigated the optimal extraction conditions, structural characterization, and anti-hepatoma activity of acidic polysaccharides (SBP) extracted from Scutellaria barbata D. Don. The results showed that SBP-2A exhibited better anti-hepatoma activity compared to SBP-1A and SBP. In vitro experiments demonstrated that SBP-2A induced HepG2 cell death, apoptosis, and G1 phase blockage. Furthermore, SBP-2A inhibited tumor growth in H22 tumor-bearing mice. These findings suggest that SBP-2A may be a potential candidate for cancer prevention.

Summary: This study isolated an acidic polysaccharide fraction (BJP-4) from blackened jujube and investigated its advanced structures and anti-inflammatory activity. The results showed that BJP-4 exhibited acid-base stability and had liquid-like properties as well as weak gel-like behavior. In vitro experiments demonstrated that BJP-4 could down-regulate the over-secretion of inflammatory factors and inhibit the NF-kappa B signal pathway. These findings contribute to the application of blackened jujube polysaccharides in the foods and medicine field.

Summary: In this study, a highly branched polysaccharide (GPF, 112.0 kDa) was isolated from Gomphus clavatus Gray fruiting bodies. GPF was composed of mannose, galactose, arabinose, xylose, and glucose at a molar ratio of 3.2:1.9:1.6:1.2:1.0. GPF exhibited anti-aging activity, increased antioxidant enzymes activities, improved total antioxidant capability, and decreased MDA level in D-Gal induced aging mice. It also improved learning and memory deficits in these mice by activating AMPK.

Summary: ATFP-3, a polysaccharide extracted from Akebia trifoliata fruit, rich in glucose and galactose, has high hydroxyl radical scavenging rate and antioxidant properties. It enhances the survival and lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans, improves antioxidant enzyme activities, and reduces aging-related accumulation of lipofuscin and malondialdehyde (MDA). Thus, ATFP-3 has potential health benefits for humans.

Summary: An acidic polysaccharide fraction (CIP3a) was extracted from Calocybe indica and further modified into carboxymethylated derivatives (CMCIP3a). The modified polysaccharide showed improved antioxidant, antitumor, and anticoagulant activities. The CMCIP3a had a high molecular weight and exhibited strong scavenging and inhibitory effects on various radicals and cancer cells. It also showed significant anticoagulant effects. These findings suggest that carboxymethylation can enhance the biological potential of polysaccharide derivatives, making them promising for the development of natural antioxidants, low-toxicity antitumor, and antithrombotic drugs.

Summary: In this study, the optimization of the decolorization methods for Rehmannia glutinosa polysaccharides (RGP) was investigated. The AB-8 macroporous resin and H2O2 methods were used. The optimal conditions for the AB-8 macroporous resin method were temperature of 50°C, resin addition of 8.4%, duration of 64 minutes, and pH of 5, with an overall score of 65.29 +/- 3.4%. For the H2O2 method, the optimal conditions were temperature of 51°C, H2O2 addition of 9.5%, duration of 2 hours, and pH of 8.6, with an overall score of 79.29 +/- 4.8%. The isolated polysaccharides, RGP-1-A and RGP-2-A, exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects through activation of the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and suppression of the TLR4/NF-kappa B pathway.

Summary: In recent years, many studies have explored the relationship between polyphenol intake and the prevention of chronic diseases. Most research focuses on extractable polyphenols found in plant-derived foods, while non-extractable polyphenols, associated with dietary fibers, are often ignored. However, these non-extractable polyphenols may have longer-lasting bioactivities and are of interest in the food industry for their potential technological functionalities. Limited research has been conducted on these conjugates, and this review aims to examine their nutritional and biological effects, as well as their functional properties.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
