Efficacy of using red dichromatic imaging throughout endoscopic submucosal dissection procedure

Aoi Kita, Shiko Kuribayashi, Yuki Itoi, Keigo Sato, Yu Hashimoto, Kengo Kasuga, Hirohito Tanaka, Hiroko Hosaka, Kazue Nagai, Hemchand Ramberan, Toshio Uraoka

Summary: The efficacy and safety of full-time red dichromatic imaging endoscopic submucosal dissection (FTR-ESD) were investigated in this retrospective observational study. The dissection speed was significantly faster in the FTR-ESD group compared to the white light imaging (WLI)-ESD group, and the therapeutic outcomes were comparable between the two groups.

Takuji Kawamura, Masau Sekiguchi, Hiroyuki Takamaru, Yasuhiko Mizuguchi, Go Horiguchi, Masayuki Kato, Kiyonori Kobayashi, Miwa Sada, Yasushi Oda, Akira Yokoyama, Takahiro Utsumi, Yosuke Tsuji, Daisuke Ohki, Yoji Takeuchi, Satoki Shichijo, Hiroaki Ikematsu, Koji Matsuda, Satoshi Teramukai, Nozomu Kobayashi, Takahisa Matsuda, Yutaka Saito, Kiyohito Tanaka

Summary: This study aims to explore whether the reasonable detection rate of endoscopically diagnosed lesions as adenomas can be calculated and used as a surrogate colonoscopy quality indicator. By analyzing a database generated from colonoscopy reports, it was found that the number of endoscopic adenomas was higher than pathological adenomas primarily due to non-resection during the examination. The overall polyp detection rate, endoscopic ADR, and pathological ADR were 56.4%, 48.0%, and 32.7% respectively.

Increased Spleen Volume in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patients Treated with Atezolizumab plus Bevacizumab in Comparison to Lenvatinib: A Retrospective Analysis

Takeshi Hatanaka, Atsushi Naganuma, Ai Furusawa, Yuki Tamura, Naoto Saito, Yuhei Suzuki, Takashi Hoshino, Yutaka Yata, Toshio Uraoka, Satoru Kakizaki

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to compare the chronological change in spleen volume between patients treated with Atez/Bev and LEN. The results showed that spleen volume gradually increased during Atez/Bev treatment, while it remained mostly consistent during LEN treatment. Caution is required when managing patients treated with Atez/Bev, especially those with a high NLR.

Validation of red dichromatic imaging score (RDI score) to evaluate the severity of ulcerative colitis

Yu Hashimoto, Shiko Kuribayashi, Keigo Sato, Yuki Itoi, Ko Nakata, Kengo Kasuga, Hirohito Tanaka, Hiroko Hosaka, Hayato Ikota, Marietta Iacucci, Toshio Uraoka

Summary: This study aims to validate the correlation between red dichromatic imaging (RDI) scores and the activity index of ulcerative colitis (UC). The results showed positive correlations between RDI scores and UCEIS, MES, and Nancy index. RDI scores had a higher correlation to histology compared to white-light imaging (WLI) scores.

Boring biopsy with rapid on-site evaluation for gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor: A pilot study

Takashi Kanesaka, Takahiro Inoue, Ayaka Tajiri, Hiromu Fukuda, Kotaro Waki, Satoki Shichijo, Akira Maekawa, Sachiko Yamamoto, Yoji Takeuchi, Koji Higashino, Noriya Uedo, Tomoki Michida, Satoshi Tanada, Keiichiro Honma, Ryu Ishihara

Summary: This article introduces the clinical practice guidelines for Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), including principles of diagnosis and management, as well as four clinical questions and corresponding recommendations. These guidelines were developed by a committee of experts from multiple academic societies, granted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and are based on a careful review of the evidence and incorporation of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system.

The relationship between manometric subtype and symptom details in achalasia

Hiroko Hosaka, Shiko Kuribayashi, Osamu Kawamura, Yuki Itoi, Keigo Sato, Yu Hashimoto, Kengo Kasuga, Hirohito Tanaka, Motoyasu Kusano, Toshio Uraoka

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between symptom profiles and subtypes of achalasia defined by the Chicago classification. Symptoms of dysphagia and chest pain were evaluated using structured self-reported questionnaires, while esophageal motility was assessed using high-resolution manometry and esophagograms. The results showed that symptom profiles and the location and timing of lesions varied among different subtypes of achalasia, possibly due to the status of the esophageal body.

Usefulness of Endoscopy for the Detection and Diagnosis of Primary Esophageal Motility Disorders and Diseases Relating to Abnormal Esophageal Motility

Shiko Kuribayashi, Hiroko Hosaka, Toshio Uraoka

Summary: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is used to diagnose esophageal motility disorders (EMDs) and rule out organic diseases. Abnormal endoscopic findings during EGD indicate the presence of EMDs. Several endoscopic findings related to EMDs have been reported at the esophagogastric junction and esophageal body. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), often associated with abnormal esophageal motility, can be detected during EGD, and image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) can improve their detection.

A Newly Developed Method-Based Xanthine Oxidoreductase Activities in Various Human Liver Diseases

Summary: This study measured the plasma XOR activities in patients with comprehensive liver diseases using a novel assay and evaluated their association with liver function parameters, purine metabolism-associated markers, oxidative stress markers, and inflammation markers. The results showed that plasma XOR activities were generally increased in liver diseases, especially in the active phase, and were closely correlated with liver function parameters, especially serum ALT levels.

Three cases of immune-related hypopituitarism after atezolizumab-bevacizumab treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma

Nozomi Furuichi, Atsushi Naganuma, Takuya Kaburagi, Yuhei Suzuki, Takashi Hoshino, Nobuyuki Shibusawa, Suguru Horiguchi, Takeshi Hatanaka, Satoru Kakizaki, Toshio Uraoka

Summary: We report three cases of immune-related hypopituitarism occurring after treatment with atezolizumab-bevacizumab for hepatocellular carcinoma. These patients experienced symptoms such as fatigue, appetite loss, and muscle weakness, and their blood tests showed decreased levels of pituitary hormones. Symptom improvement was achieved with glucocorticoid therapy.

Summary: The risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can be predicted by endoscopic findings without the use of iodine staining, which is irritating to the esophagus. This prospective study aimed to investigate the association between multiple foci of dilated vascular areas (MDV) observed in narrow-band imaging (NBI)/blue laser imaging (BLI) and the incidence of metachronous esophageal SCC.
