Summary: Fumonisins are mycotoxins commonly found in contaminated maize. Immunoassays are used for initial screening, and mass spectrometry is used for confirmation. This study introduces a portable mass spectrometer for measuring fumonisins in maize, and validates the method with 64 samples. The results show good correlation between the portable mass spectrometer and the laboratory-based LC-MS method.

Summary: The real-time measurement and control of optical nanofiber diameters are crucial in various applications. A novel method based on monitoring scattered light intensity is proposed, achieving ultra-high precision and accuracy control within the range of 400 nm to 750 nm. The method is also applicable to optical fibers with different wavelengths.

Summary: This study investigates the formation and crystallinity of Si1-xGex alloy films by ion implantation. The results show that germanium is mainly incorporated in substitutional sites in the crystal network, and the Si1-xGex layer is monocrystalline. Additionally, the experiment reveals that implantation at 600 degrees C leads to deeper Ge diffusion compared to ambient temperature implantation, but with a deteriorated crystallinity.

Summary: The use of silica particles with encapsulated DNA (SPED) as a tracing agent for measuring indoor aerosol distribution was successfully demonstrated in a series of experiments, showing the ability to quantitatively observe position dependency and ventilation effects in a confined space with detection limits below 0.1 ng particles per m(3) of sampled air. SPED show promise for a flexible, cost-effective, and low-impact characterization of aerosol dynamics in a wide range of settings.

Summary: Polymeric composite materials are increasingly important due to their versatility and adaptability. Current analysis methods cannot provide the necessary information on both organic and elemental constituents. This study presents a novel approach using laser ablation and concurrent measurements with EI-MS and ICP-OES to directly characterize the main components of solid polymer samples.

Summary: A method for aerosol chemical analysis using a handheld Raman spectrometer has been developed and applied to measure crystalline silica concentration in workplace atmosphere. The method involves collecting aerosol as a spot sample using a wearable optical aerosol monitor, and then quantitatively analyzing the spot sample for crystalline silica using a handheld Raman spectrometer.

Summary: This research aims to propose an improved method for calculating sensitivity coefficients to evaluate the uncertainty of RCS concentration measured by X-ray diffraction. Results show that for low concentrations, the major contribution to uncertainty is due to the X-ray diffraction calibration line.

Summary: Hospital bed management is crucial for patient care, and a simulation model has been developed to mimic real-world bed management rules to improve efficiency. The study showed that accurately forecasting, using data and statistical distributions to predict patient length of stay, and applying generic bed management rules can correctly predict the short-term processes of a Trauma & Orthopaedic bed management system.

Summary: The article introduces a newly designed portable device, a test stand, for measuring sound waves reflected from a building's facade. The device can also be used to monitor environmental noise. The article includes a detailed description of the construction and assembly of the test stand. By referencing ISO 1996-2 standard, the study demonstrates significant discrepancies between standard norm corrections and experimental results.

Summary: The measurement of ethanol and toxic alcohol strengths in beverages and spirits is crucial for health reasons and for identifying adulterated products. Chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques have been used, but their application is time-consuming or requires sample pretreatment. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was used for fast and non-destructive measurements. A through the container method was developed for a non-invasive analysis. The method was validated with calibration curves and used to study the concentrations of alcohol in various products.

Summary: Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is a powerful technique for trace element analysis of solid samples, but its full quantitative capability is limited by the complex relationships between various factors. Altering laser ablation conditions can effectively change the physicochemical properties of LA-generated particles and improve the understanding of their impact on corresponding ICPMS signals. This multidimensional particle characterization approach can comprehensively study LA-generated particles and their effects on ICPMS signals, with potential for extension to other samples and laser wavelengths.

Summary: This study evaluated the on-road BC emissions from ten in-use light-duty passenger vehicles (LDPVs) using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) platform. The emission factors (EFs) of vehicles with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines were found to be higher than those with port fuel injection (PFI) engines. A strong correlation was observed between vehicle speed and BC emissions, and BC emissions were linearly correlated with particle number (PN) emissions.
