Ionic liquids are a class of solvents and materials that hold great promise in bioanalytical chemistry. Task-specific ionic liquids have recently been designed for the selective extraction, separation, and detection of proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, and other physiologically relevant analytes from complex biological samples. To facilitate rapid bioanalysis, ionic liquids have been integrated in miniaturized and automated procedures. Bioanalytical separations have also benefited from the modification of nonspecific magnetic materials with ionic liquids or the implementation of ionic liquids with inherent magnetic properties. Furthermore, the direct detection of the extracted molecules in the analytical instrument has been demonstrated with structurally tuned ionic liquids and magnetic ionic liquids, providing a significant advantage in the analysis of low-abundance analytes. This article gives an overview of these advances that involve the application of ionic liquids and derivatives in bioanalysis.

Mimicking human ingestion of microplastics: Oral bioaccessibility tests of bisphenol A and phthalate esters under fed and fasted states

Summary: Little effort has been made to study the impact of chemical additives in microplastics on human health. This study investigated the oral bioaccessibility of plastic additives and monomers in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics using standardized bioaccessibility tests. It was found that the gastric and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility of certain additives and monomers was highest under fed-state gastrointestinal extraction conditions.

Characterizing RNA Modifications in Single Neurons using Mass Spectrometry

Summary: Post-transcriptional modifications (PTMs) of RNA play a role in regulating translation in the central nervous system (CNS). A protocol called single-neuron RNA modification analysis by mass spectrometry (SNRMA-MS) is described, which can detect and quantify multiple RNA modifications in individual neurons. This method has been validated in A. californica, and has revealed the diverse RNA modification patterns in identified neurons.

The metal-organic framework PCN-250 for the extraction of endocrine disrupting compounds in human urine by stir bar sorptive dispersive microextraction

Summary: An analytical method combining stir bar sorptive dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the determination of twelve endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in urine samples. The PCN-250(Fe2Mn) metal-organic framework (MOF) was used as the sorbent, with cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) magnetic nanoparticles for magnetic retrieval. The method showed good validation parameters and successfully applied to human urine samples.

An automatic flow-through system for exploration of the human bioaccessibility of endocrine disrupting compounds from microplastics
