Low flower-size variation in bilaterally symmetrical flowers: Support for the pollination precision hypothesis

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The evolutionary shift from radial to bilateral symmetry in flowers is generally associated with the evolution of low flower-size variation. This phenomenon supports the hypothesis that the lower size variation in bilateral flowers can be attributed to low pollinator diversity. In this study, we propose two other hypotheses to explain low flower-size variation in bilateral symmetrical flowers. To test the three hypotheses, we examined the relative importance of pollinator diversity, composition, and bilateral symmetry itself as selective forces on low flower-size variation. METHODS: We examined pollinator diversity and composition and flower-size variation for 36 species in a seminatural ecosystem with high bee richness and frequent lepidopteran visitation. KEY RESULTS: Bilateral flowers were more frequently visited than radial flowers by larger bees, but functional-group diversity of the pollinators did not differ between symmetry types. Although bilateral flowers had significantly lower flower-size variation than radial flowers, flower-size variation did not vary with pollinator diversity and composition but was instead related to bilateral symmetry. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the lower size variation in bilateral flowers might have evolved under selection favoring the control of pollinator behavior on flowers to enhance the accurate placement of pollen on the body of the pollinator, independent of pollinator type. Because of the limited research on this issue, future work should be conducted in various types of plant-pollinator communities worldwide to further clarify the issue.

Summary: The study compared insect species collected on persimmon flowers with that on clover. Before persimmon bloomed, Bombus ardens ardens and Apis cerana japonica were major visitors of clover flowers, however, once persimmon bloomed, former became the most abundant bee visiting persimmon flowers over the flowering period while Apis mellifera was captured only on clover flowers. This suggests that B. ardens ardens utilized the clover flowers under the orchards before persimmon bloomed.

Evaluation of sampling effort required to assess pollen species richness on pollinators using rarefaction

Summary: Researchers used microscopic observation of droplets from sample solutions containing pollen grains collected from six major pollinator functional groups to detect most pollen species on individual pollinators. Rarefaction curve analysis showed that observing six droplets could identify approximately 90% of the pollen species and plant-pollinator links in the networks, reducing the time and labor required for studying individual flower visitation history and revealing hidden interactions.

The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks offer valuable data for vegetation ecology, macroecology, and biodiversity conservation, serving as a complementary data source in macroecology despite having a smaller spatial coverage compared to other databases.

Development of environmental DNA detection assays for snakes in paddy fields in Japan

Summary: Paddy ecosystems are highly diverse, but can be degraded due to consolidation or abandonment. Understanding snake distribution is crucial for paddy biodiversity conservation. This study developed environmental DNA (eDNA) detection assays to easily survey snakes in paddy ecosystems. Specific assays were designed for three common snake species, and their DNA was successfully identified in field samples. Land-use type was found to affect the detection of one of the snake species. This study is the first to use eDNA analysis to survey snakes in paddy ecosystems and contributes to paddy ecosystem monitoring.

Intersexual flower differences in an andromonoecious species: small pollen-rich staminate flowers under resource limitation

Horizontal orientation facilitates pollen transfer and rain damage avoidance in actinomorphic flowers of Platycodon grandiflorus

Summary: The study investigates the adaptive significance of horizontal flower orientation in radially symmetrical flowers and its effects on pollinator behavior and pollen damage avoidance. This suggests that horizontal flower orientation is adaptive and beneficial for insect-pollinated flowers during the rainy season.

Habitat preference influences response to changing agricultural landscapes in two long-horned bees

Our study found that different species have different responses to different land uses, partly due to their habitat preferences. Some populations declined rapidly under more intensive land uses, while others maintained or increased their numbers.

Sexual dimorphism in a dioecious species with complex, specialist-pollinated flowers

Summary: Pollinators with flower constancy and long nectar-feeding organs should not favor sexual dimorphism in the individual flowers of dioecious plants. In this study, we found that the female flowers of Trichosanthes cucumeroides have similar front flower size and fringe extension as male flowers, but differ in floral biomass, petal size and shape, fringe density, tube length and display size. Removal of fringes decreased moth visitations to both female and male flowers, but had a greater impact on female flowers. These findings suggest that resource limitation and flower-size sensitivity of pollinators drive sex-specific selection of floral traits in T. cucumeroides.

Contribution of genetic analyses to semi-natural grassland biodiversity conservation in Japan

In Japan, conservation and management of semi-natural grassland organisms have been a major concern due to their threatened extinction. This review examines the current trends in conservation-ecological studies on Japanese semi-natural grassland organisms using genetic information, highlighting five categories of research and the applicability of high-throughput sequencing.

Trait variation along an urban-rural gradient in Asian dayflower: the contribution of phenotypic plasticity and genetic divergence

Summary: It has been suggested that urban environments promote both plastic response and genetic divergence of a set of traits in native plants. Our findings suggest that low leaf number, SLA, and positive plant height-leaf area correlations have evolved. In addition, larger plant size is achieved via phenotypic plasticity in urban environments.

Identification of effective pollinators of Primula sieboldii E. Morren in a wild habitat in Hiroshima, Japan
