Machine Learning-Assisted Rapid Screening of Four Types of New Psychoactive Substances in Drug Seizures

Summary: New psychoactive substances (NPS) have become a global problem due to their diversity, legal ambiguity, and ability to adapt to legal restrictions. We propose using supervised machine learning models to rapidly screen NPS using mass spectrometry data. These models achieved F1 scores of 0.35-0.97 and successfully detected synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic cathinones, and fentanyl in drug trafficking cases.

Summary: In recent years, the wide variety and constant structural renewal of new psychoactive substances (NPS) have posed challenges for their screening and identification using traditional mass spectrometric techniques. In this study, supervised machine learning (ML) classification models were proposed for the rapid screening of NPS using mass spectrometric data. Four ML models were generated and evaluated, achieving an F1 score of 0.35-0.97. These models were successfully applied in detecting NPS in drug trafficking cases.

Rapid In Situ Detection of THC and CBD in Cannabis sativa L. by 1064 nm Raman Spectroscopy

Summary: Finding a fast and effective technique for real-time detection of THC and CBD in cannabis is a pressing issue in the field of forensics. Raman spectroscopy, with its cost-effective, fast, noninvasive, and nondestructive properties, is identified as the most suitable method. This study utilized Raman spectroscopy with 1064 nm excitation wavelength to analyze 42 different samples. The results demonstrated the high reproducibility of spectra and the ability to immediately distinguish between THC and CBD through Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the ratio between Raman bands at 1295/1440 and 1623/1663 cm(-1) was identified as an immediate test parameter for evaluating THC content in the samples.

Persistent binding at dopamine transporters determines sustained psychostimulant effects

Summary: By using various in vitro, computational, and in vivo approaches, we found that the drug-binding kinetics of S-enantiomers of pyrovalerone analogs at DAT correlate with the time-course of in vivo psychostimulant action in mice. In particular, the slow dissociation (i.e., slow koff) of S-enantiomers of pyrovalerone analogs from DAT can predict their more persistent in vivo effects compared to cocaine and methylphenidate. Overall, our findings highlight the critical importance of drug-binding kinetics at DAT in determining the in vivo profile of effects produced by psychostimulant drugs.

Advanced Biomarkers of Hepatotoxicity in Psychiatry: A Narrative Review and Recommendations for New Psychoactive Substances

Summary: The effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in patients abusing new psychoactive substances (NPSs) is enhanced by proper liver function. However, current articles on NPS hepatotoxicity only focus on non-specific liver parameters. This study reviews three advanced markers of hepatotoxicity, osteopontin (OPN), high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), and glutathione dehydrogenase (GDH/ GLDH), to identify recommendations for future studies on NPS abusers. Determining the hepatotoxic effects of NPSs and distinguishing them from other factors such as additional substances and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is crucial, particularly due to the heightened risk of HCV infection in NPS abusers.

Pharmacology and adverse effects of new psychoactive substances: synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists

Systematic studies on the adverse effects of NPS are lacking, highlighting the need for more research and understanding of these substances to address associated health issues.

A Quantitative LC-MS/MS Method for the Detection of 16 Synthetic Cathinones and 10 Metabolites and Its Application to Suspicious Clinical and Forensic Urine Samples

Summary: This study presents a validated LC-MS/MS method for detecting and quantifying synthetic cathinones and their metabolites in human urine. Analysis of suspicious urine samples from Saudi Arabia revealed the presence of synthetic cathinones, specifically mephedrone and N-ethylpentylone, as well as their dihydro-metabolites, along with other classical stimulant drugs. This is the first report of new psychoactive substance use in Saudi Arabia involving designer stimulant drugs. The findings highlight the need for broader urine analysis to detect and report otherwise undetected or new analytes.

Reagent types and action mechanisms in ilmenite flotation: A review

Summary: Ilmenite is an essential mineral for titanium extraction. Flotation has been applied in dressing plants for the recovery of fine ilmenite. The interactions between reagent groups and Ti/Fe sites on the ilmenite surface play a critical role in ilmenite flotation. Activators, mostly metal ions including lead ions, promote ilmenite flotation by increasing active sites on the surface. Combined reagents show better selectivity in ilmenite separation due to their synergistic effect. This study discusses reagent types and action mechanisms in ilmenite flotation and proposes a future outlook based on previous research.

Neuroimaging oxytocin modulation of social reward learning in schizophrenia
