Determination of trace element contents in crude oils constitutes a powerful geochemical tool, complementing organic geochemical analyses and allowing a deeper insight into the processes of oil generation, migration and maturation. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been widely applied to trace element determination in petroleum samples due to its low detection limits and fast multi-element capability. However, quantification of several elements by quadrupole-based ICP-MS is hampered by low sensitivity due to high ionisation energy, severe polyatomic interferences and/or low abundance. In the present contribution an ICP tandem mass spectrometer (ICP-MS/MS), or triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ-MS) has been used to overcome these limitations. Prior to analysis, samples were subjected to high pressure acid digestion, allowing external calibration by means of aqueous standards. 25 elements, including P, S, the first-row transition metals, As, Se, Re, Pb and U, could be quantified in one measurement. Polyatomic interferences on the lighter elements could be removed by reaction of the target ions with O-2 or NH3 in the collision/reaction cell of the ICP-MS/MS. The accuracy of the analytical method was assessed by the analysis of the standard reference materials NIST SRM 1634c (trace elements in fuel oil) and 1084a (wear-metals in lubricating oil). The measurement procedure was applied to the analysis of crude oil samples from the Alpine Foreland Basin of Austria. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Studies on the Formation and Processing of Aluminium Dross with Particular Focus on Special Metals

Stefan Wibner, Helmut Antrekowitsch, Thomas C. Meisel

Summary: Aluminium is the leading metal in non-ferrous metallurgy in terms of production volume, and the recycling of aluminium-containing residues is increasing and will continue to be important. The oxidation of molten aluminium leads to the formation of dross, which is a valuable residual material that needs further processing. The experimental study evaluated the pyrometallurgical treatment of Al-dross in a salt drum furnace with a salt mixture, and investigated the behavior of rare earth elements during the melting process.

Characterization of Zr-Containing Dispersoids in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu Alloys by Small-Angle Scattering

Mohammad Taha Honaramooz, Roland Morak, Stefan Pogatscher, Gerhard Fritz-Popovski, Thomas M. Kremmer, Thomas C. Meisel, Johannes A. Oesterreicher, Aurel Arnoldt, Oskar Paris

Summary: Characterizing Zr-containing dispersoids in aluminum alloys is challenging due to their diverse size distribution, low volume fraction, and uneven distribution within the grains. This study compared small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in characterizing Zr-containing dispersoids. Both scattering techniques were found suitable for characterizing dispersoids in a multi-phase industrial 7xxx series aluminum alloy. SAXS was more sensitive than SANS due to the high electron density of Zr-containing dispersoids, while SANS had the advantage of probing a larger sample volume. The combination of both techniques allowed for distinguishing the contribution of dispersoids from other precipitate phases.

PETROCHEMICAL AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PORPHYRY COPPER MINERALIZATION IN THE ASTANEH ORE DEPOSIT, MIDDLE PART OF THE URUMIEH-DOKHTAR MAGMATIC ARC (IRAN)

S. Beygi, M. Tadayon, R. K. Ilalova, I. V. Talovina, T. C. Meisel

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the petrochemical characteristics of rocks and determine the relationship between the distribution of porphyry copper mineralization and the tectonic position of faults. The results show that the rocks of the Astaneh ore deposit were formed in the suprasubduction zone and the mineralization process can be divided into three stages. The tectonomagmatic phases of the development of the Neotethys Ocean have a high spatio-temporal similarity with the main stages of the formation of the porphyry copper ore deposit in the study area.
