The purpose of this study was to identify the patient populations at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and determine which medical and dental comorbidities are significant risk factors for this disease. An electronic search of Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global was conducted to identify all human studies that reported risk factors for MRONJ. Only a qualitative analysis was performed due to significant heterogeneity in the collected data. The search strategy identified 2872 records, of which 219 studies were eligible for inclusion. A total of 4106 patients with MRONJ were identified, 39 different systemic diseases were implicated, and 14 medical and 11 dental risk factors were reported, although no statistical analysis of the significance of each of these factors was possible. The clinical reach of MRONJ may be wider than anticipated, and more data on the significance of each potential risk factor are needed to guide the identification and management of at-risk patients.

Clinical supervisors' reflections on their role, training needs and overall experience as dental educators

Emma K. Bartle, Kelly M. McGowan

Summary: The study aimed to understand clinical supervisors' views overseeing final year dental students and investigate their role, support, and training. Results showed low levels of formal training and the need for further development. The driving motivator for supervisors was a desire to teach, but challenges like lack of recognition and defined career pathways were reported.

Developing a prototype for integrated dental and diabetes care: understanding needs and priorities

K. McGowan, T. Phillips, E. Gielis, T. Dover, G. Mitchell, A. Mutch, C. Sexton, P. M. Sowa, S. Ivanovski

Summary: This study found that the majority of diabetes patients had not visited a dentist in the previous year, with a high percentage requiring periodontal assessment and having multiple carious lesions. Both patients and staff showed strong support for integration of dental care at diabetes clinics, with similar unmet treatment needs and access rates for private and public dental patients.

SMS reminders to improve outpatient attendance for public dental services: A retrospective study

Nicole Stormon, Christopher Sexton, Cecilia Chen, Elizabeth Hsu, Pei-Chen Chen, Kelly McGowan

Summary: The study shows that implementing SMS reminders in public dental services can improve attendance rates, but for the Children and Adolescent Oral Health Service (CAOHS), attendance rates decreased and unable to attend (UTA) rates increased, while for adult services, attendance rates increased. Overall, SMS reminders had mixed effects on CAOHS and adult services.

Disposable and reusable instruments in dental health practice: A comparison of cost factors in a public provider organization in Queensland, Australia

P. Marcin Sowa, Jonas Fooken, Kelly McGowan, Stephen Birch

Summary: Choosing between reusable instruments and disposable instruments for dental care provision requires a careful consideration of costs, procedure type, and environmental impact. This study found that reusable instruments are generally more cost-effective than disposable instruments, but the best choice still depends on the specific procedure. The current practice of using a mix of instruments can offer the lowest cost alternative in certain cases.

Do Post-injury Prophylactic Antibiotics Reduce Infection for Isolated Midface Fractures: A Cohort Study

Joel Tuckett, Gary Ian Brierly, Jason Tong, Kelly McGowan, Lakshmi Ramalingam, Martin Druce Batstone

Summary: The use of postinjury prophylactic antibiotics for midfacial fractures to prevent infection is often questioned. This retrospective multicenter cohort study found that there was no significant difference in infection rates between patients who received postinjury prophylactic antibiotics and those who did not. Therefore, the practice of using antibiotics for midfacial fractures should be reconsidered.

Dental referrals for patients with diabetes: survey of barriers and enablers for medical and health professionals

K. Davies, K. McGowan, T. Dover, T. McGowan, S. K. Tadakamadla

Summary: This study aimed to understand the barriers to and enablers of dental referrals for patients with diabetes. The results showed that time constraints, lack of awareness and knowledge regarding dental referrals were significant barriers, while online referral pathways, more education, and availability of resources were identified as key enablers for dental referrals.

Utilisation of a brief tobacco smoking cessation intervention tool in public dental services

Hollie Bendotti, Kelly McGowan, Sheleigh Lawler

Summary: This study highlighted the important role of dental practitioners in promoting smoking cessation. Although a significant number of smokers visited the oral health service, not all of them received smoking cessation support. Addressing barriers to smoking cessation promotion in oral health care settings may improve overall and oral health outcomes for patients.
