Dopaminergic neuronal injury in the substantia nigra (SN) is a pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the underlying mechanism of this injury remains elusive. Since fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) is involved in midbrain development and has been reported to protect neurons from ischemic injury, we investigated whether FGF18 exerted a protective effect on dopaminergic neurons in the SN. In vitro data showed that FGF18 significantly ameliorated the neurotoxicity of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) through the AKT/GSK3 beta signaling pathway. Further study of the 6-OHDA-induced PD rat model indicated that FGF18 improved the behavioral dysfunction in PD rats and reduced the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neuronal loss in the SN. In addition, 6-OHDA induced a loss of TH-positive fibers that was reversed by pretreatment with FGF18. Taken together, these data suggest that FGF18 plays a protective role against parkinsonian neurodegeneration in the nigrostriatal system in a 6-OHDA-induced PD rat model and that further drug discovery based on FGF18 has a potential role for PD therapy. Ruiheng Zhang, Shuo Yang, Qi Zhang, Lixin Xu, Yang He, Fan Zhang

Summary: The paper proposes a method to transform features extracted by a pre-trained self-supervised feature extractor into a Gaussian-like distribution to reduce feature distribution mis-match, and to solve incorrect class allocation through computing an optimal class allocation matrix.

Filter Pruning by Switching to Neighboring CNNs With Good Attributes

Yang He, Ping Liu, Linchao Zhu, Yi Yang

Summary: Filter pruning is an effective method to reduce computational costs in neural networks. However, existing methods often overlook the interdependencies between filters and rely solely on magnitude information. To address this issue, the proposed meta-attribute-based filter pruning approach considers the geometric distance between filters and adaptively selects pruning criteria based on the current state of the network.

Causal associations of circulating Helicobacter pylori antibodies with stroke and the mediating role of inflammation

Summary: In this study, it was found that H. pylori VacA antibody is the only factor associated with the risk of stroke, and C-reactive protein may mediate this association. This study suggests that inhibition of the CRP signaling pathway may reduce the risk of stroke in patients with VacA-positive H. pylori infection.

Tobacco and alcohol consumption and the risk of frailty and falling: a Mendelian randomisation study

Xingzhi Guo, Peng Tang, Lina Zhang, Rui Li

Summary: Tobacco use, but not alcohol drinking, significantly increases the risk of frailty and falling, according to a two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis using genetic instruments. Genetically determined initiation of smoking and cigarettes consumption per day were both positively associated with frailty and falling, while there was no significant causal association between alcohol use and the risk of frailty and falling.

Mendelian randomization investigation highlights different roles of selenium status in mental disorders

Xingzhi Guo, Peng Tang, Chen Hou, Rui Li

Summary: Observational studies have suggested a relationship between selenium status and mental disorders (MDs). This study used Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the causal effects of selenium levels on seven MDs. The results showed that genetically predicted blood selenium levels were associated with a decreased risk of schizophrenia and anorexia nervosa, while both blood and blood-toenail selenium levels were linked to an increased risk of major depressive disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

Summary: The intestinal microbiota has a significant impact on the water-holding capacity of muscles in broilers, influencing meat quality. When raised in the same environment, two native breeds of broilers exhibit similarities in muscle water-holding capacity and gut bacteria compositions. Human Placenta Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transplantation Reducing Cellular Apoptosis in Hypoxic-Ischemic Neonatal Rats by Down-Regulating Semaphorin 3A/Neuropilin-1

Yang He, Jun Tang, Meng Zhang, Junjie Ying, Dezhi Mu

Summary: This study investigated the protective effects and mechanisms of human placenta derived mesenchymal stem cells (hPMSCs) transplantation in a rat model of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The results showed that hPMSCs transplantation reduced apoptosis and improved long-term neurological prognosis. Furthermore, the downregulation of Sema 3A/NRP-1 expression and activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway played a key role in the protective effects of hPMSCs.

Summary: This study evaluated electrophysiological discrimination of parametric somatosensory stimuli in healthy young adults to understand how the brain processes the duration of tactile information. The results showed that participants did not electrophysiologically discriminate between 100 and 115 ms, but they exhibited distinct electrophysiological responses when the deviant stimuli were 130, 145, and 160 ms. These findings contribute to a better understanding of tactile sensitivity in different clinical conditions.

Summary: The basolateral amygdaloid complex (BLA) is closely involved in the formation of emotional memories, including both aversive memory and contextual fear memory. Acute sleep deprivation (SD) disrupts the acquisition of tone-associated fear memory in juvenile rats, but has no significant effect on contextual fear memory. Slow network oscillation in the amygdala contributes to the formation of amygdala-dependent fear memory in relation to sleep.

Enhanced Gasdermin-E-mediated Pyroptosis in Alzheimer's Disease

Qunxian Wang, Shipeng Guo, Dongjie Hu, Xiangjun Dong, Zijun Meng, Yanshuang Jiang, Zijuan Feng, Weihui Zhou, Weihong Song

Summary: GSDME plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease by regulating the switch from apoptosis to pyroptosis and participating in neuroinflammatory response. Knockdown of GSDME has been shown to improve cognitive impairments, indicating that GSDME could be a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease.
