Summary: This study found that the design of fast casual restaurant menus, consumers' dietary behaviors, and demographic characteristics are closely related to young adults' calorie choices. Education level and race have no significant impact on calorie choices, while normal weight and overweight individuals are more likely to choose low-calorie foods than obese individuals. Moreover, labeling calories and using green symbols on restaurant menus may influence some young people to choose low-calorie foods.

Summary: This study evaluated the associations between dietary changes and risk factors of type 2 diabetes in older populations in Sharpeville, South Africa. The results showed that women had significantly higher BMI levels compared to men, and waist circumference significantly decreased. Furthermore, intakes of total energy, fatty acids, and cholesterol were positively associated with BMI and waist circumference, while fatty acid intake was negatively associated with HOMA-IR and HOMA-B.

Summary: This systematic review examines the effects of dietary berries on cardiometabolic dysfunction and oxidative stress, finding that dietary berries have a high antioxidant status that can increase antioxidant capacity and reduce biomarkers of oxidative stress. However, the reported effectiveness varied and further research is needed to determine the acute and sustained reductions of oxidative stress biomarkers from dietary berry intake.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in old age affects the musculoskeletal system causing loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical function. Stress-inducible proteins named sestrins may serve as novel biomarkers for muscle function. The study aimed to investigate the association between different force-velocity profiles and body composition, physical performance, and glucose control in older adults with T2DM. The results showed that older adults with T2DM exhibited different F-V profiles, which were associated with low levels of Sesn2, impaired body composition, and physical performance.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between portion sizes (PSs) from different food groups and energy, as well as nutrient intakes in European adolescents. The results showed that energy intake increased with elevated intakes of energy-dense foods. Larger portions of certain food groups were associated with increased intake of specific nutrients. Conversely, larger portions of high energy-dense foods were associated with lower intake of vitamins and micronutrients. These findings have implications for future dietary guidance and targeted strategies to address nutrient intakes in European adolescents.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the self-perception of primary healthcare (PHC) nurses and general practitioners (GPs) towards the implementation of physical activity prescription (PAP) in PHC centers. Two semi-structured group interviews were conducted with GPs and nurses working in the PHC system in Madrid, Spain. The results showed common self-perceptions, barriers, and facilitators among PHC nurses and GPs for PAP implementation. This organizational data can provide insight for designing future cost-effective policy strategies to improve patient health and healthcare system sustainability.

Summary: The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding on demand until at least the sixth month of life. Breast milk or infant formula is the infant's primary food source until the age of one year, followed by the gradual introduction of other foods. This study aimed to determine whether a novel starting formula provides gut microbiota compositions more similar to those of breastfed infants from 6 to 12 months of age compared to a standard formula.

Summary: The study examines the influence of nutritional factors on frailty syndrome and identifies cross-sectional associations between diet-related blood biomarker patterns and frailty status. The results demonstrate that older adults with higher concentrations of total carotenoids, beta-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin are relatively robust, while those with higher lutein + zeaxanthin concentrations are more frail. These findings provide guidance for the development of future biomarker-based frailty indices.

Summary: This study determined the contents of 38 elements in ready-to-eat baby food sold in Spain and estimated the dietary intakes and risk assessments of these elements in infants between 6 and 12 months old. Results showed that fish purees had the highest concentrations of mercury and arsenic. The levels of manganese, molybdenum, and chromium exceeded the adequate intake, particularly in store brands. The presence of these contaminants in food intended for infants, a sensitive population, highlights the importance of monitoring their levels.

Summary: This longitudinal study analyzed changes in physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, anxiety, mood, and perceived health in Spanish university students during and one year after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed decreased physical activity, increased sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health during confinement. Most parameters improved one year later, but participants still reported lower physical activity, more sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health compared to before confinement. Higher levels of physical activity and lower sedentary time were associated with better sleep and mental health during the pandemic.
