Energy recovery from waste is one of the strategies that can assist the expansion of renewable energy in Brazil. Among the various types of waste, vinasse, which is a residue that contains a high organic load, originates from the sugarcane industry, which is a very important industry for the Brazilian economy. Due to high levels of sugarcane harvesting in the country and the production of large amounts of ethanol, vinasse is, produced at high levels in Brazil. In this context, this paper presents an energy analysis of the avoided carbon dioxide emissions and economic viability associated with the combustion of biogas produced by the anaerobic digestion of the vinasse that results from the use of sugar cane planted in Brazil. Based on the literature review, data related to the process of biogas production from anaerobic digestion of the vinasse were collected and used for the calculation of the energy potential associated. The results show that to achieve economic viability for the use of this waste for energy, the following plantation areas would be required, considering their processed sugarcane equivalents: 14,580 ha (if considering the processing of sugarcane in attached plants), and 6000 ha (if considering the processing of sugarcane in autonomous plants). The total energy potential of this use may reach 3.26 TWh(e)/y, which represents 0.52% of all domestic energy consumption in 2014. The potential to avoid emissions from the same use could reach 1.9 Mt CO2/y, which is approximately 2.1% of the emissions for the whole industry in Brazil in 2014. These results demonstrate the environmental and energy benefits that can be obtained via power generation from biogas produced by the anaerobic digestion of vinasse and highlight the need to include the use of such residue for energy in expansion plans for the Brazilian energy matrix. Energy and economic analysis for a desalination plant powered by municipal solid waste incineration and natural gas in Brazil

Marina de Sa Moreira, Ivan Felipe Silva dos Santos, Lilian Ferreira Freitas, Flavio Ferreira Freitas, Regina Mambeli Barros, Geraldo Lucio Tiago Filho

Summary: Brazil faces water scarcity issues, particularly in the northeast region. Installing desalination plants using incineration as an energy source is a possible solution, but alternative energy technologies are needed. Energy analysis showed incineration alone cannot provide sufficient energy for desalination, but with municipal consortia and government incentives, costs can be reduced significantly.

Summary: Brazil has significant energy generating potential from agricultural byproducts such as rice straw, sugar cane straw, and coffee husks. This study found that these residues have a total potential of 15 GW, with 90% coming from sugar cane. The southeast region of Brazil has the greatest potential for sugar cane and coffee cultivation, while rice cultivation is mainly located in the South and Central-West regions.

Energy and economic evaluation of MSW incineration and gasification in Brazil

Livia Fernanda Rodrigues, Ivan Felipe Silva dos Santos, Thereza Isabelle Silva dos Santos, Regina Mambeli Barros, Geraldo Lucio Tiago Filho

Summary: This study analyzes the use of gasifiers and incinerators as technology for municipal solid waste treatment and energy generation in three municipalities in Brazil. The results show that the second scenario has greater energy potential but higher generation costs. Different cities choose different technologies based on their levels of organic matter. However, neither technology is economically viable in any city or condition, highlighting the need for government incentives to promote their feasibility.

Energy and economic study of using Pumped Hydropower Storage with renewable resources to recover the Furnas reservoir

Johnson Herlich Roslee Mensah, Ivan Felipe Silva dos Santos, Danielle Rodrigues Raimundo, Maria Claudia Costa de Oliveira Botan, Regina Mambeli Barros, Geraldo Lucio Tiago Filho

Summary: Hydroelectric power plants in Brazil have lost competitiveness to wind and solar power due to a water crisis and depleted reservoirs. However, using Pumped Hydropower Storage (PHS) in combination with solar and wind resources could help recover water levels and improve economic performance. Energy calculations show that PHS could generate 1692 MWh/day of energy, but an additional 2729 MWh/day is needed to store the generated energy. Economic studies indicate viability for PHS scenarios I and III, but scenario II is unviable and controversial.

A critical analysis of the energy situation in the Benin Republic and its evolution over the last decade

Johnson Herlich Roslee Mensah, Ivan Felipe Silva dos Santos, Geraldo Lucio Tiago Filho

Summary: Electricity demand in Benin has been increasing due to population growth, and the government aims to boost renewable energy production to address energy deficits and ensure electricity access for all by 2035. However, despite the country's potential for renewable energy, it can only supply a small fraction of its energy needs, leading to increased electricity imports. Benin has seen a significant increase in solar power generation, but only a limited number of inhabitants have access to electricity. Additionally, Benin is the largest consumer of oil products and an electricity importer within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).

Summary: The anaerobic digestion process produces renewable fuel biogas and digestate as a by-product. The use of mineral additives improves biogas production, but their chronic effects on digestates are not well studied. This research analyzes the chronic effects of digestates from swine manure with and without iron ore tailings on the survival and reproduction of Enchytraeus crypticus. The findings suggest that the metals in digestates might have a synergistic effect on the organisms' survival and reproduction, but further analysis is needed to understand the toxicity under different climate conditions.
