This paper proposes the real-time estimation of the root-mean-square (rms) values, primary power quantities (active, total apparent, nonactive power, and power factor), and distortion power using the maximal overlap wavelet packet transform (MODWPT). The MODWPT provides a uniform frequency band and possesses the timeinvariance property, which is ideal for the real-time power estimation. The performance of the proposed wavelet-based power measurement was assessed and compared to the IEEE Standard 1459-2010 in different case studies including stationary synthetic waveforms and power quality disturbances in experimental setup. The proposed method presented good results in the estimation of rms values and primary power quantities by using compact mother wavelets, whereas the estimation of distortion power was better with long mother wavelets.

Traveling Wave-Based Transmission Line Earth Fault Distance Protection

Rafael Lucas da Silva Franca, Francisco Caninde da Silva Junior, Tiago R. Honorato, Joao Paulo G. Ribeiro, Flavio Bezerra Costa, Felipe Lopes, Kai Strunz

Summary: This paper proposes a one-terminal traveling wave-based transmission line earth fault distance protection function, which only requires the detection of the first incident modal earth fault-induced traveling waves, eliminating the need to detect wavefronts reflected from the fault point. The proposed function is more accurate and significantly reduces transmission line distance protection tripping times without dependability losses.

Sergey Yanchenko, Flavio B. Costa, Kai Strunz

Summary: The simulation tool developed for modeling harmonic propagation in low voltage distribution networks uses a hybrid domain approach to accurately represent nonlinear household devices and the supply network. Compared to traditional methods, the tool offers higher accuracy, shorter simulation times, and improved convergence under weak grid conditions. Two application examples demonstrate its effectiveness compared to brute force time domain modeling.

Phasor-Based Single-Phase Auto-Reclosing Scheme for Non-Compensated Transmission Lines

Karcius M. C. Dantas, Felipe V. Lopes, Kleber M. Silva, Flavio B. Costa, Nilo S. S. Ribeiro

Summary: An approach is proposed in this paper to detect the secondary arc extinction in single-phase auto-reclosing of non-compensated transmission lines. The approach involves analyzing the line side voltage phasors in the modal domain to identify the presence and extinction of the secondary arc. It can also determine if the arc re-ignites during the line dead time. The proposed approach can be easily implemented in existing Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) without additional hardware or equipment requirement.

Real-time wavelet-based adaptive algorithm for low inertia AC microgrids power measurements

Denis Keuton Alves, Ricardo Lucio Araujo Ribeiro, Luiz Felipe de Queiroz Silveira, Thiago de Oliveira Alves Rocha

Summary: This paper proposes a real-time wavelet-based power estimator using a real-time modified stationary discrete wavelet packet transform (RT-MSDWPT). The proposed method overcomes the conventional SDWPT main constraints of power estimations related to the lack of reactive power flow direction and susceptibility to off -nominal frequency operation.

Wavelet-Based Harmonic Magnitude Measurement in the Presence of Interharmonics

Flavio B. B. Costa, Stefan Haselbarth, Sergey Yanchenko, Aurenice M. M. Oliveira, Kai Strunz

Summary: The increasing presence of power electronic converters, nonlinear loads, and distributed generation has resulted in higher levels of harmonic and interharmonics in power networks. This has made power quality a crucial performance indicator for both power utilities and end-users. This study introduces a novel harmonic estimation method that utilizes real-time stationary discrete wavelet packet transform (RT-SDWPT). The proposed technique decomposes the input signal into frequency bands with harmonic information and uses compensation to estimate root mean square (RMS) values of harmonics at each sampling period. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms traditional methods in terms of accuracy and speed.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel method of capacitor condition monitoring for the dc-link of power converters used in distributed energy resources systems. The method injects an intermittent noncharacteristic signal into the dc-link to estimate the equivalent series resistance (ESR) and capacitance (C) of the capacitors. A real-time stationary discrete wavelet packet transform (RT-SDWPT) is used for capacitor parameter estimations. Experimental results from a microgrid laboratory setup demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Adaptive Grid Impedance Shaping Approach Applied for Grid-Forming Power Converters

Ricardo Lucio de Araujo Ribeiro, Arman Oshnoei, Amjad Anvari-Moghaddam, Frede Blaabjerg

Summary: This paper proposes an adaptive grid impedance shaping approach, implemented through a variable structure virtual impedance control strategy, to improve the power flow control of grid-forming power converters. The method considers the X/R ratio and power rating, and uses virtual negative resistance and positive virtual reactance to implement the virtual impedance. The virtual reactance is divided into two parts, providing a fine-tuning action to match the control objectives and compensate grid impedance uncertainties. Experimental tests demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
