High performance thin layer chromatographic method (HPTLC) has been developed for the quantification of reserpine and ajmalicine in root part of two different population of Rauvolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. ex Kurz and Rauvolfia tetraphylla L., Apocynaceae, collected from Punjab and Uttarakhand. HPTLC of methanolic extract of root containing indole alkaloids, i.e., reserpine and ajmalicine, was performed on TLC Silicagel 60 F-254 (10 CM x 10 cm) plates with toluene:ethyl acetate:formic acid (7:2:1), as mobile phase. Quantification of the reserpine and ajmalicine was performed in the absorption-reflection mode at 268 nm. The recovery of reserpine and ajmalicine were 99.3 and 98.7% respectively. The calibration curves were linear for both the reserpine and ajmalicine, in the range of 200-1200 ng. HPTLC densitometry has been performed for the estimation of reserpine and ajmalicine in root part of R. serpentina and R. tetraphylla for the first time. The method is simple, rapid and cost effective and can be used for routine analysis of ajmalicine and reserpine in different Rauvolfia species as well as for quality control of herbal drugs containing Rauvolfia species. Summary: Global agricultural demand and fluctuating climatic conditions have severely impacted crop productivity and caused inflation in the agricultural market. Plants have their own molecular and signaling mechanisms to combat drought stress, with polyamine signaling playing a major role. Polyamine metabolism pathways are correlated with various plant responses, such as seed germination, plant growth, defense, hormonal regulation, stress tolerance, and crop yield. Recent transcriptomic and metabolomic studies have enhanced our understanding of stress-induced biochemical and molecular alterations in plants.

Summary: Lung cancer is a major cause of cancer-related deaths. The altered metabolism of cancer cells results in changes in metabolite concentrations, which can be used to identify distinct metabolic patterns for cancer detection. Understanding and analyzing the variations in metabolites can provide early biomarkers and insights into the progression and type of lung cancer.

Summary: Infection with viruses, bacteria, and parasites is responsible for about 8-17% of global cancer burden, with one in every five malignancies being caused by an infectious pathogen. Eleven major pathogens are believed to aid in oncogenesis. It is important to identify potential human carcinogens and understand the pathways they induce to effectively prevent and control pathogen-driven cancers. This review focuses on major onco-pathogens, the types of cancer they cause, and the altered pathways leading to cancer progression.

Orchid Micropropagation Using Conventional Semi-Solid and Temporary Immersion Systems: A Review

Potshangbam Nongdam, David G. G. Beleski, Leimapokpam Tikendra, Abhijit Dey, Vanlalrinchhani Varte, Soumaya EL Merzougui, Vania M. M. Pereira, Patricia R. R. Barros, Wagner A. A. Vendrame

Summary: Orchids are highly valued in the floricultural industry for their stunning flowers and therapeutic properties. However, excessive commercial collection and habitat destruction have led to the depletion of orchid resources, making conservation measures crucial. Conventional propagation methods are unable to meet the demand for ornamental orchids, but in vitro orchid propagation using temporary immersion system (TIS) offers a promising solution with lower production costs and potential for automation.

Hafiza Padinharayil, Jinsu Varghese, Mithun Chacko John, Golgodu Krishnamurthy Rajanikant, Cornelia M. Wilson, Minnatallah Al-Yozbaki, Kaviyarasi Renu, Saikat Dewanjee, Rupa Sanyal, Abhijit Dey, Anirban Goutam Mukherjee, Uddesh Ramesh Wanjari, Abilash Valsala Gopalakrishnan, Alex George

Summary: Continuous revision of the histologic and stage-wise classification of lung cancer by the World Health Organization (WHO) supports therapeutic advances and accurate diagnosis. Cancer epidemiologic data provide helpful information for cancer prevention and management. Global cancer mortality projections indicate that cancer will become the leading cause of death, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) which accounts for a significant portion of lung cancers. Early diagnosis and proper management play crucial roles in NSCLC therapies. Advanced techniques, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and targeted molecular therapies, have improved the treatment of late-stage NSCLC. However, the improvement of cancer biomarkers and the development of prospective studies are needed for better therapeutic outcomes.
