Summary: In conventional process monitoring, a latent variable model (LVM) is first learned in offline training and the statistics related to extracted latent features and residuals are then used for online monitoring. However, such a practice ignores the dynamic interaction between modeling and monitoring, rendering useful online samples underexplored. This study proposes a novel LVMs-based monitoring framework that exploits the interaction using a weighting strategy and the maximum likelihood method to improve the monitoring performance with online information.

Summary: Path commands obtained through a traveling route strategy are essential for auto-steering control in agricultural fields. Planning paths can increase work rate and quality, balancing time efficiency and path length while considering irregularities in field boundaries. Existing algorithms may not guarantee global optimality, prompting the development of a novel and practical infield path planner to address this issue.

Summary: In this study, a complete set of basic Boolean logic operations is implemented using compact psi-shaped silicon-on-silica optical waveguides at a 1.55 mu m wavelength. The logic gates operate based on interference effects resulting from phase differences of input optical beams and their performance is evaluated using the contrast ratio (CR) metric.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of decision-making characteristics on university adjustment and academic performance and proposes that maximizing tendency as a decision-making style influences adaptive outcomes in college life. Two studies found that maximizers among students have better university adjustment and achieve higher GPAs. Furthermore, eudaimonic well-being mediates the relationship between maximizing tendency and university adjustment, while university adjustment mediates the relationship between maximizing tendency and college student's academic performance. These consistent results imply the long-term positive impacts of maximizing tendency on adaptability and wellbeing.

Summary: Microgels can absorb and retain a large amount of solvents, especially water, and the release kinetics of active molecules from microgels is easier to control than from hydrogels. In this study, cytocompatible collagen I microgels were produced by emulsification-gelation, and the effect of collagen I concentration and homogenization method on the properties of microgels was evaluated.

Summary: Based on experimental and numerical simulations, the addition of hydrogen in a retrofitted Wankel engine was found to increase combustion temperature and pressure, optimizing combustion processes and improving engine stability. However, it also led to increased nitrogen oxide emissions, which could be mitigated by diluting the mixture.

Summary: The management of plastic waste has become a major challenge, and a potential solution is to transform it into activated carbons for energy storage devices such as supercapacitors. This study demonstrates a two-step procedure to convert common plastic waste into activated carbons suitable for supercapacitor electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the activated carbons is outstanding, and controlling various parameters enables the conversion of different types of plastic waste into high-performing supercapacitor electrodes.

Summary: A three-dimensional numerical simulation was conducted to evaluate the winglet design for small UAVs. By varying the winglet parameters, the optimum values were determined to minimize drag and maximize range and endurance. It was found that winglets with a cant angle of 70 degrees and 90 degrees had better aerodynamic performance, while the sweep angle did not show any significant variation.

Summary: Two low migration acylphosphine oxide photoinitiators (APO and DAPO) containing unsaturated C=C double bonds have been designed and synthesized for free radical polymerization. The properties and performances of APO and DAPO were evaluated and compared with a commercial photoinitiator, showing that DAPO exhibited the best double bond conversion and lower migration, making it a potential candidate for industrial applications.

Summary: This paper investigates the maximization of non-submodular function under a knapsack constraint and explores the performance of the greedy algorithm. The authors provide a tight approximation guarantee for the greedy algorithm, which fills the gap in this area and is the first of its kind for this problem. Illustrative examples are used to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm.

Summary: This paper studies a parcel locker location problem in the context of the growing complexity of logistics services in the e-commerce industry. The objective is to maximize profit by attracting customers through the introduction of self-service parcel lockers. The paper proposes a combinatorial optimization model that relaxes the strict assumptions of the binomial logit model and the multinomial logit model. The results show that the use of these models can lead to either conservative or aggressive revenue estimation, highlighting the need for a more flexible approach. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to investigate the impact of the relative attractiveness of locker services on location decisions, emphasizing the importance of calibrating the input parameters.

Summary: The extensive irrigation systems in South Asia consist of a hierarchy of canals delivering water to tertiary units, with a network of field channels managed by farmers/farmer associations. This paper develops a mathematical model/algorithm to optimize construction costs by routing field channels along existing field boundaries. The model was applied to the Gomal Zam Irrigation System in Pakistan, resulting in a 20% reduction in total length compared to expert judgment.

Summary: The most significant investment in water governance in Pakistan in recent decades, the irrigation management transfer, was repealed in 2019. Before moving on to the next major experiment, it is necessary to explore the potential for improvement in water governance. A conceptual model is developed to understand the roles of hydrology, infrastructure, management, governance, and learning in shaping water supply. The analysis suggests that the previous consideration of scale in water governance is inappropriate, and instead recommends identifying key problem areas to improve local water governance.

Summary: This study uses climate projections to analyze future climate hazards in the Gomal Zam Dam Command Area in Pakistan. The results indicate that heatwaves and agricultural drought will pose significant risks to the area, calling for immediate actions for preparedness and adaptation. The study also explores the correlation between drought indices and crop yield, providing insights into drought characterization for agriculture. Analyzing climate hazards at the local level could be a more effective approach for climate resilience.
