To monitor the fluctuations of dimethyl sulfur compounds at the seawater/atmosphere interface, an automated system was developed based on sequential injection analysis coupled with vapor generation-ion molecule reaction mass spectrometry (SIA-VG-IMRMS). Using this analytical system, dissolved dimethyl sulfide (DMSaq) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), a precursor to DMS in seawater, were monitored together sequentially with atmospheric dimethyl sulfide (DMSg). A shift from the equilibrium point between DMSaq and DMSg results in the emission of DMS to the atmosphere. Atmospheric DMS emitted from seawater plays an important role as a source of cloud condensation nuclei, which influences the oceanic climate. Water samples were taken periodically and dissolved DMSaq was vaporized for analysis by IMRMS. After that, DMSP was hydrolyzed to DMS and acrylic acid, and analyzed in the same manner as DMSaq. The vaporization behavior and hydrolysis of DMSP to DMS were investigated to optimize these conditions. Frequent (every 30 min) determination of the three components, DMSaq/DMSP (nanomolar) and DMSg (ppbv), was carried out by SIA-VG-IMRMS. Field analysis of the dimethyl sulfur compounds was undertaken at a coastal station, which succeeded in showing detailed variations of the compounds in a natural setting. Observed concentrations of the dimethyl sulfur compounds both in the atmosphere and seawater largely changed with time and similar variations were repeatedly observed over several days, suggesting diurnal variations in the DMS flux at the seawater/atmosphere interface.

Summary: Finding prey is essential to marine predators' survival, and natural DMS concentrations are spatially correlated to zooplankton biomass. Agent simulations demonstrate that tracking fine-scale gradients of DMS leads zooplankton predators to areas with higher prey biomass efficiently.

Summary: A fast response potentiometric flow-through pH sensor was used for organic acid determination with ammonia permeation device for baseline pH adjustment. By titrating the introduced organic acids, the pH response could be used for theoretical calculation of analyte concentrations. Real sample analysis showed good agreement between the present system and conventional BTB method.

Summary: Short-lived radioactive metals are important tracers in clinical diagnosis, and can be effectively separated using selective complex formation and cation-exchange adsorption. This method allows for rapid and efficient separation of radioactive metals from target metals, using a principle opposite to that of typical solid-phase extraction.

Biogenic Diamines and Their Amide Derivatives Are Present in the Forest Atmosphere and May Play a Role in Particle Formation

Kentaro Saeki, Kazuya Ikari, Hiroyuki Yokoi, Shin-Ichi Ohira, Hiroshi Okochi, Kei Toda

Summary: Diamines, including Dap and Put, are essential organic bases for plants and are emitted into the atmosphere. Analysis shows that amide derivatives of Dap and Put are found in higher concentrations in the atmosphere than their source diamine. These aminoamides are likely produced after the release of Dap and Put into the atmosphere. The concentrations of biogenic diamines and aminoamides vary throughout the day, with lower concentrations during sunny conditions, indicating photochemical decomposition. They readily bond with water vapor and sulfuric acid in the atmosphere and may play a role in the formation of particles and organic aerosols in the forest atmosphere.

Summary: This paper proposes a feedback standard addition method coupled flow injection analysis, FB-SAM/FIA, for the rapid and accurate determination of trace interest in seawater samples. This approach significantly improves the sample throughput compared to the manual standard addition method. The FB-SAM/FIA technique successfully applied to the determination of NO2- in natural seawater samples.

Summary: In this study, an automated sampler/preconcentrator was developed to monitor variations in ortho- and para-NPs over time in the gas and particle phases separately. The study found that NPs were mostly present in the gas phase and concentrations increased at night. Additionally, 2-nitro-o-cresol was detected for the first time as one of the major NPs in winter.
