This study is dedicated to the systematic investigation of the effect of interferences on Sr isotopic analyses in biological apatite and carbonate matrices using laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC ICP-MS). Trends towards higher Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios for LA-MC ICP-MS compared to solution-nebulization based MC ICP-MS when analysing bioapatite matrices (e.g. human teeth) and lower ratios in case of calcium carbonates (e.g. fish ear stones) were observed. This effect can be related to the presence of significant matrix-related interferences such as molecular ions (e.g. (Ca-40-P-31-O-16)(+), (Ar-40-P-31-O-16)(+), (Ca-42-Ca-44)(+), (O-46,Ar-40)(+)) as well as in many cases concomitant atomic ions (e.g. Rb-87(+), Hf-174(2+)). Direct Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio measurements in Ca-rich samples are conducted without the possibility of prior sample separation, which can be accomplished routinely for solution based analysis. The presence of Ca-Ar and Ca-Ca molecular ion interferences in the mass range of Sr isotopes is shown using the mass resolving capabilities of a single collector inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometer operated in medium mass resolution when analysing bioapatites and calcium carbonate samples. The major focus was set on analysing human tooth samples, fish hard parts and geological carbonates. Potential sources of interferences were identified and corrected for. The combined corrections of interferences and adequate instrumental isotopic fractionation correction procedures lead to accurate data even though increased uncertainties have to be taken into account. The results are discussed along with approaches presented in literature for data correction in laser ablation analysis. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary: The study revealed the movement patterns of an Arctic woolly mammoth that lived 17,100 years ago, showing variations in mobility across a geographically extensive range during its approximately 28-year lifespan. Maintaining such level of mobility for megafaunal species like mammoth would have become increasingly challenging as the ice age ended and the environment changed at high latitudes.

Summary: This study proposes the use of nitrous oxide (N2O) as a non-corrosive and non-toxic alternative for calcium isotope analysis. Instrument performance testing shows that N2O can achieve equivalent detection limits and background concentrations compared to traditional gases. Further testing with synthetic standards highlights N2O's advantage in separating interferences from potassium and magnesium.

Summary: The potential of otolith microchemistry as a fishery management tool for different European freshwater fish species in an Alpine foreland was assessed in this study. Water samples from 26 habitat sites in a pre alpine catchment region were analyzed to determine the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios and Sr/Ca ratios, and 246 fish from 16 species were studied to determine the Sr/Ca ratios in otoliths. The study found that otolith microchemistry, when combining the 87Sr/86Sr and Sr/Ca ratios, has great potential to serve as a fishery management tool at smaller spatial scales.

Summary: Although there are already established bioindicator organisms and tissues, this pilot study aimed to find reliable and sensitive bioindicators in aquatic environments. The study found that calcified structures in fish, combined with commonly used fish soft tissues and intestinal parasites, were effective indicators of metal exposure in short- and long-term. Despite differences in metal contents, all applied bioindicators reflected similar environmental conditions, indicating higher levels of most elements in contaminated fish. The study confirmed the sensitivity of the intestinal parasites as bioindicators and highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring and protective actions in the polluted river.

Characterization of iron oxides: Valence states and naturally occurring polymorphs using chemical shift of X-ray FeLβ1 line by WD-XRF

Piyali Deb Barman, Ashok Kumar Maurya, Subhendu Ghosh, Ankit Roy, Mukul Madaan

Summary: In X-ray spectroscopic studies, K beta 1,3 lines have been used to examine the chemical states of 3d transition metals, but are not suitable for characterizing iron oxides. Instead, FeL-lines, which involve the valence shell 3d electrons, were inspected and found to provide information on the chemical states of iron. The study established a linear relationship between the chemical shift of FeL beta 1 line and spin multiplicity, allowing for the speciation of iron.
