Summary: The majority of psychiatric patients showed significantly reduced changes in oxyhemoglobin concentrations and significantly fewer produced words during the VFT, indicating that changes in HbO are more sensitive for most psychiatric disorders. Meta-analyses revealed hypoactivation in frontotemporal regions for major depression and schizophrenia, with disorder-specific topographical distribution. Findings suggest that the fNIRS-VFT paradigm holds promise for understanding and differentiating psychiatric disorders.

Summary: Individuals with ADHD experience difficulties in verbal fluency as an executive function. In this study, the researchers found that anodal left dlPFC stimulation improved phonemic verbal fluency, while anodal right dlPFC and right IFG stimulation enhanced semantic verbal fluency. This domain-specific improvement can be attributed to the distinct cognitive demands of phonemic and semantic verbal fluency tasks.

Summary: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is characterized by enhanced reactivity to alcohol-related cues and insufficient control processes. This study found that activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) during alcohol-specific inhibition was related to craving and predicted drinking outcome in AUD patients at 3 months follow-up. However, the neurophysiological correlate of alcohol-specific inhibition was not modulated by the training.

Summary: Our study identified dysfunctional pre-attentive change-detection ability in patients with panic disorder, particularly in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), as indicated by reduced MMNm amplitudes. Higher trait anxiety scores were associated with lower MMNm amplitudes in the right IFG among patients with panic disorder.

Summary: The study investigates how the frontal control region interacts with temporal representation in semantic integration by using inhibitory transcranial magnetic stimulation. The results suggest a two-stage gesture-speech integration circuit with sequential involvement of pMTG and IFG, providing new insights into the dynamic brain network of multimodal semantic processing.

Summary: Deviant activation patterns and weaker functional connectivity were observed in patients with major depressive disorder during a cognitive task, compared to healthy individuals. Network metrics provided by graph theory were useful in evaluating functional connectivity, which can help explain the cognitive impairments caused by depression. The efficiency of the functional network showed a significant difference between patient and control groups and was negatively correlated with depression severity.

Summary: This study investigated reading comprehension deficits in high-functioning ASD children and explored the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms using fNIRS. The results showed that ASD children had difficulties in reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and information processing speed. Specifically, during the semantic verbal fluency test, lower connectivity in the PFC was observed, which was associated with differences in reading comprehension ability.

Summary: The study demonstrates that enhancing the activity of the ventral attentional network in right-hemispheric stroke patients can improve the reaction speed of the dorsal attentional network to visual stimuli and alleviate neglect symptoms. This effect is significantly associated with the integrity of the right anterior insula and adjacent inferior frontal gyrus.

Summary: The study found that the high-functioning group showed higher left intra-hemispheric global efficiency and nodal strength in LFT tasks, while the low-functioning group demonstrated less left-lateralized connectivity and activation power. LFT performance was only related to the network topology rather than the power values.

Summary: This study systematically compared abstract related, concrete unrelated, and concrete related gestures, finding that abstract related and concrete unrelated stimuli elicited stronger activation of the bilateral IFG. Laterality effects indicate a left hemispheric dominance for metaphoric gestures and a right hemispheric dominance for unrelated gestures.

Summary: The study explored the functional activation and connectivity of the left inferior frontal gyrus using functional magnetic resonance imaging, revealing differences in activation and connectivity for objects and letters in a naming task. The results highlight the different roles played by this brain region in lexical, syntactic, and phonological retrieval during speech production.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of brain surgery on language function, identifying a link between specific brain stimulation and semantic errors, which are influenced by the semantic characteristics of items. Patients with frontal tumors are more likely to produce synonym errors, while those with temporal tumors are more likely to produce co-hyponym errors. Therefore, stricter naming tasks conditioned by tumor location are necessary to understand the effects of brain lesions on language selection mechanisms.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the distinctive signal of the paracentral lobule (PL) on T1-weighted images and evaluate its utility in identifying the central sulcus. The results showed that the PL cortex had higher signal intensity compared to the superior frontal cortex and could accurately identify the central sulcus in 94.3% of cases.

Summary: This study found that locally advanced gastric cancer with two measurable lymph nodes with a short-axis diameter greater than or equal to 8 mm on preoperative MDCT is highly associated with extensive lymph node metastasis and poorer surgical outcomes. This criterion might be a reasonable indicator for identifying candidates for neoadjuvant treatment of advanced gastric cancer.

Summary: The study explores how individuals using mental health services in Japan perceive personal recovery and identifies compassion for others, rebuilding/redefining identity, and positive childhood experiences as key factors promoting recovery. The findings suggest that cultural values play a significant role in shaping identities and personal values, ultimately impacting the process of personal recovery.

Summary: This study investigated the longitudinal association between psychotic experiences and loneliness among adolescents. The results showed a significant positive association between psychotic experiences and subsequent loneliness, suggesting that loneliness could be a sign of underlying psychotic experiences in young adolescents. However, the reverse association, between preceding loneliness and later psychotic experiences, was not significant.

Summary: This study examined the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors with mental health problems among school-age children in Mongolia. The results showed that male gender, low maternal education, short sleep, lack of physical activity, and long screen time were associated with a higher risk of mental health problems. The findings suggest the presence of globally common socioeconomic and lifestyle risk factors, and may help in developing targeted preventive interventions for high-risk groups and promoting a healthy lifestyle in Mongolia.

Summary: The histological growth pattern of liver metastases is a prognostic factor in colorectal cancer, with non-desmoplastic pattern associated with hepatic vein invasion and worse survival outcomes. Non-desmoplastic pattern in liver metastasis is also associated with high-grade tumor budding, high-grade poorly differentiated cluster, absence of mucinous histology, and aberrant p53 expression in the primary colorectal cancer.

Summary: By nature, humans are participating subjects/player-witnesses who encounter an unpredictable real world. We propose incorporating the interaction loop into cognitive sciences to create world-informed neuroscience (WIN). Based on research with people who do not match the world, we hypothesize that the interaction between individuals and the world occurs in a two-dimensional way of rule-based and story-based. Integrating the humanities and sciences, this approach can contribute to real world issues and diversity and inclusion.

Summary: This study investigated the association between parenting stress, maternal depressive symptoms, and use of physical punishment when the child is 10 years old. The results showed that maternal parenting stress experienced at 1 and 36 months after birth predicted the use of physical punishment, even after adjusting for maternal depressive symptoms. Therefore, maternal support should be provided to cope with parenting stress and prevent the use of physical punishment in early adolescence.
