Recent studies have suggested that functional abnormalities in Broca's area, which is important in language production (speech and thoughts before speech), play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. While multi-modal approaches have proved useful in revealing the specific pathophysiology of psychosis, the association of functional abnormalities with gray matter volume (GMV) here in subjects with an ultra-high risk (UHR) of schizophrenia, those with first-episode schizophrenia (FES), and healthy controls has yet to be clarified. Therefore, the relationship between cortical activity measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during a verbal fluency task, and GMV in the Broca's area assessed using a manual tracing in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which considers individual structural variation, was examined for 57 subjects (23 UHR/18 FES/16 controls). The UHR and FES group showed significantly reduced brain activity compared to control group in the left pars triangularis (PT) (P=.036, .003, respectively). Furthermore in the FES group, the reduced brain activity significantly positively correlated with the volume in the left PT (B = 0.29, P = .027), while significant negative association was evident for all subjects (B = -0.18, P = .010). This correlation remained significant after adjusting for antipsychotics dosage, and voxel-wise analysis could not detect any significant correlation between impaired cortical activity and volume. The significant relationship between neural activity and GMV in the left PT may reflect a specific pathophysiology related to the onset of schizophrenia. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Localization of the central sulcus using the distinctive high signal intensity of the paracentral lobule on T1-weighted images

Shinichi Cho, Ryo Kurokawa, Akifumi Hagiwara, Wataru Gonoi, Harushi Mori, Takuya Kawahara, Moto Nakaya, Naoya Sakamoto, Nana Fujita, Satoru Kamio, Hiroaki Koyama, Osamu Abe

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the distinctive signal of the paracentral lobule (PL) on T1-weighted images and evaluate its utility in identifying the central sulcus. The results showed that the PL cortex had higher signal intensity compared to the superior frontal cortex and could accurately identify the central sulcus in 94.3% of cases.

Identifying multiple swollen lymph nodes on preoperative computed tomography is associated with poor prognosis along with pathological extensive nodal metastasis in locally advanced gastric cancer

Motonari Ri, Hiroharu Yamashita, Wataru Gonoi, Yasuhiro Okumura, Koichi Yagi, Susumu Aikou, Yasuyuki Seto

Summary: This study found that locally advanced gastric cancer with two measurable lymph nodes with a short-axis diameter greater than or equal to 8 mm on preoperative MDCT is highly associated with extensive lymph node metastasis and poorer surgical outcomes. This criterion might be a reasonable indicator for identifying candidates for neoadjuvant treatment of advanced gastric cancer.

Culture-dependent and universal constructs and promoting factors for the process of personal recovery in users of mental health services: qualitative findings from Japan

Akiko Kanehara, Haruna Koike, Yumiko Fujieda, Sayaka Yajima, Asami Kabumoto, Yousuke Kumakura, Kentaro Morita, Yuki Miyamoto, Masahiro Nochi, Kiyoto Kasai

Summary: The study explores how individuals using mental health services in Japan perceive personal recovery and identifies compassion for others, rebuilding/redefining identity, and positive childhood experiences as key factors promoting recovery. The findings suggest that cultural values play a significant role in shaping identities and personal values, ultimately impacting the process of personal recovery.

Summary: Patients with schizophrenia may experience intelligence decline, and previous studies have suggested that gray matter structures and functional connectivity are more relevant to this decline than white matter microstructures.

Psychotic experiences predict subsequent loneliness among adolescents: A population-based birth cohort study

Summary: This study investigated the longitudinal association between psychotic experiences and loneliness among adolescents. The results showed a significant positive association between psychotic experiences and subsequent loneliness, suggesting that loneliness could be a sign of underlying psychotic experiences in young adolescents. However, the reverse association, between preceding loneliness and later psychotic experiences, was not significant.

Socioeconomic and lifestyle factors associated with mental health problems among Mongolian elementary school children

Summary: This study examined the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors with mental health problems among school-age children in Mongolia. The results showed that male gender, low maternal education, short sleep, lack of physical activity, and long screen time were associated with a higher risk of mental health problems. The findings suggest the presence of globally common socioeconomic and lifestyle risk factors, and may help in developing targeted preventive interventions for high-risk groups and promoting a healthy lifestyle in Mongolia.

Histological growth patterns of colorectal cancer liver metastases: a strong prognostic marker associated with invasive patterns of the primary tumor and p53 alteration

Summary: The histological growth pattern of liver metastases is a prognostic factor in colorectal cancer, with non-desmoplastic pattern associated with hepatic vein invasion and worse survival outcomes. Non-desmoplastic pattern in liver metastasis is also associated with high-grade tumor budding, high-grade poorly differentiated cluster, absence of mucinous histology, and aberrant p53 expression in the primary colorectal cancer.

Summary: By nature, humans are participating subjects/player-witnesses who encounter an unpredictable real world. We propose incorporating the interaction loop into cognitive sciences to create world-informed neuroscience (WIN). Based on research with people who do not match the world, we hypothesize that the interaction between individuals and the world occurs in a two-dimensional way of rule-based and story-based. Integrating the humanities and sciences, this approach can contribute to real world issues and diversity and inclusion.

Maternal parenting stress from birth to 36 months, maternal depressive symptoms, and physical punishment to 10-year-old children: a population-based birth cohort study

Junko Niimura, Miharu Nakanishi, Syudo Yamasaki, Shuntaro Ando, Sho Kanata, Shinya Fujikawa, Yuko Morimoto, Kaori Endo, Mariko Hiraiwa-Hasegawa, Kiyoto Kasai, Atsushi Nishida

Summary: This study investigated the association between parenting stress, maternal depressive symptoms, and use of physical punishment when the child is 10 years old. The results showed that maternal parenting stress experienced at 1 and 36 months after birth predicted the use of physical punishment, even after adjusting for maternal depressive symptoms. Therefore, maternal support should be provided to cope with parenting stress and prevent the use of physical punishment in early adolescence.
