Summary: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric illness with diverse brain cell types involved in its development. There are significant sexual differences in MDD clinical presentation and molecular basis. In this study, single-nucleus RNA-sequencing data was used to analyze brain cells from male and female donors, revealing similar gene expression patterns but differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in specific cell types between sexes. This research provides insights into the cell type specificity of sex differences in depression.

Summary: Soil salinity and alkalization in northwest China negatively impact plant growth and result in severe ecological problems. This study investigated the responses of male and female Populus euphratica seedlings to salinity, alkali, and their interaction. The results showed that male seedlings exhibited superior resistance and performed better than females under these stress conditions, with differences observed in growth, gas exchange, stomatal density, carbon isotope composition, soluble sugar and starch contents, Na+ accumulation and allocation, oxidative stress, and antioxidants.

Summary: This study demonstrates that sex disparities in cardiac function are not only controlled by sex hormones but also through a sex-chromosome mechanism, particularly involving X-linked gene dosage. The research also shows that cardiac sex disparities occur at the earliest stages of heart formation, before gonad development. Loss of A1BG is found to lead to cardiac defects in females but not in males.

Summary: Passengers standing on public transport face disruptions during non-collision incidents caused by driver maneuvers, with stepping strategies described as inadequate for describing different recovery strategies. A particularly effective balance recovery strategy labeled the fighting stance was identified, showing increased ability to withstand higher perturbations by improving postural stability to limit body displacement. High jerk perturbations seemed to induce faster and more successful balance recovery, especially for those adopting the fighting stance, compared to high acceleration and braking perturbation profiles.

Summary: Our knowledge of birdsong has mainly focused on male songs in a short breeding period, but this study examines the singing activity of an endemic, sedentary, duetting songbird. The study finds that the Bangwa forest warbler sings year-round, with more activity during the wet season. Male singing behavior suggests territory defense and female attraction, while female duets may serve purposes such as mate guarding or resource defense. The study highlights the importance of examining year-round singing behavior to understand the evolution and functions of male and female songs.

Summary: Sex differences between males and females appear early in life and have far-reaching effects on various aspects of our physical, psychological, cognitive, and behavioral characteristics. These differences also play a role in individual health and disease susceptibility. This article reviews the biological mechanisms underlying sex differences in brain organization and function, and how these differences manifest in behavioral and psychological traits. The implications of biologically determined variability between males and females for gender-specific healthcare are discussed.

Summary: This study formalizes the treatment of directed quantum walks using Hermitian adjacency matrices, connecting the developing fields of quantum information and spectral graph theory. Results and simulations are shown to highlight conceptual differences between encoding directions in Hamiltonians or not. A new type of quantum phenomenon is discovered: zero transfer between pairs of sites in a connected coupled network, which is only possible in the directed model studied. The main result is a description of several families of directed cycles that allow for zero transfer.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the differences and similarities in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) between sexes, as well as to assess the potential impact of psoriasis on disease burden in PsA patients. The results showed that female PsA patients had a higher disease severity, greater disease activity, worse function, and higher disease burden, while males were more prone to skin involvement. However, there was no significant association between skin involvement and patient global assessment in the regression analysis.

Summary: Trpc6 deficiency can prevent doxorubicin-induced cardiac damage, especially in male mice. Female mice are less susceptible to doxorubicin-induced cardiac damage and functional changes but Trpc6-deficient females show improved vacuolation under doxorubicin treatment. Sex differences in body weight and expression of Trpc1, Trpc3, and Rcan1 were observed in response to doxorubicin in both wild-type and Trpc6-deficient mice.

Additionally, both gender identity and sexuality were found to have small to large correlations with dissatisfaction with gender-atypical body characteristics.
