Summary: The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) increases in males aged >45 years, which indicates that androgens are associated with the development and/or progression of NAFLD, although excess dietary intake is the primary causative factor. Our study demonstrates that testosterone can influence the development of NAFLD by increasing the expression of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and LKB1 and modulating the AMPK-ACC signaling pathway.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of betulin, a terpenoid compound with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and insulin-sensitizing effects, on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by a high-fat diet. The results showed that betulin could ameliorate hyperlipidemia, liver lipid accumulation, and fibrosis, as well as inhibit inflammation and oxidative stress. It also enhanced the activity of antioxidants and improved insulin resistance.

Summary: Autophagy and mitochondrial deficits are characteristics of early phase of Alzheimer's disease. This study explored the impact of the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor dapagliflozin on autophagic and mitochondrial pathways in a rat model of ovariectomy and d-galactose injection. The results showed that dapagliflozin could mitigate cognitive deficits and promote neuroprotection through activation of energy sensors and autophagic markers. Additionally, dapagliflozin enhanced mitochondrial function and decreased BACE1 expression.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing health issue globally, characterized by the presence of steatosis in the liver. Vanillic acid (VA), as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative factor, has protective effects on the liver in animal models by reducing liver damage and adipogenesis through AMPK activation, targeting various metabolic abnormalities of NAFLD.
