Summary: This study investigated the effects of various nanoparticles on the growth and biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans, a main cause of tooth decay. The results showed that these nanoparticles could inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans, and decrease the expression of related genes. Among them, Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14) nanoparticles had the best effect and could potentially be used as a coating on dental surfaces.

Summary: Osteomyelitis is a challenging infectious disease that affects both humans and animals. Diagnosis is difficult due to non-specific symptoms and delayed onset after surgery in many cases. Treatment is also challenging as finding the right antibiotic regime and delivery system to reach the infection site while avoiding bacterial resistance is necessary. This review aims to compare the microbiological aspects of osteomyelitis in human and veterinary medicine to improve diagnosis and treatment in animals. Studying osteomyelitis in animals may also aid in the development of animal models for testing new treatments in humans.

Summary: The study indicates that systemic antibiotic therapy can effectively inhibit biofilm formation within 3 days of infection, but becomes ineffective after 7 days. Combination treatment with rifampin may be necessary to inhibit implant-associated osteomyelitis.

Summary: Novel CuFe12O19@hydroxyapatite magnetic nanocomposites (CuFe12O19@HAp MNCs) were synthesized for the first time as controlled target drug delivery by ultrasound-assisted precipitation method. The magnetic substrate was functionalized with APTES (CuFe12O19@HAp-APTES MNCs) to enhance the efficiency of the drug delivery system. Various characterization techniques were used to analyze the crystallinity, size, morphology, and composition of the products. The CuFe12O19@HAp-APTES MNCs exhibited the highest entrapment efficiency (63.1%) and controlled-release potential for the model drug (atenolol) compared to pure CuFe12O19@HAp MNCs. The cytotoxicity of ATL-loaded magnetic nanocomposites (ATL-CuFe12O19@HAp-APTES MNCs) was evaluated, and the results demonstrated that the synthesized magnetic nanocomposites could serve as effective vehicles for sustained delivery of atenolol.

Summary: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is the gold standard antibiotic carrier for osteomyelitis, but biodegradable ceramic carriers may have better antibiotic elution properties. This study evaluated the in vitro elution efficacy of vancomycin from calcium sulfate (PG-CSH) and PMMA beads on Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. PG-CSH beads exhibited higher elution rates, more bacterial killing, and larger zones of inhibition compared to PMMA beads. Future research should focus on testing other difficult-to-treat clinical strains.

Summary: With the increasing global burden of diabetes, diabetic foot infections (DFI) and diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO) present major challenges. There is uncertainty regarding the optimal medical treatment for these conditions, specifically whether local antibiotics should be used alone or in combination with systemic antibiotics. A narrative review was performed to summarize relevant studies on non-prophylactic local antibiotics for DFI and DFO treatment. The findings suggest limited evidence for the use of local antibiotic delivery systems in standard DFO treatment, and highlight the potential benefits of adding local agents to conventional systemic antibiotics for infected diabetic foot ulcers.

Summary: In this study, chitosan-hydroxyapatite composite layers were deposited on Si substrates in argon gas using RF magnetron sputtering discharge. Analytical techniques like FT-IR, SEM, MM, and AFM were used to investigate the composition and structure. The surface morphology of the composite layers varied with Ar gas working pressure, showing antimicrobial properties and potential biomedical applications.

Summary: This study reports on the detection of ppb-level NO2 using ZnO nanocrystalline film with visible-light and mild thermal-activation modes. Trivalent and tetravalent doping trigger fast response behavior, with the best performance seen from a combination of purple-blue light and thermal activation. The influence of relative humidity on gas sensing performances is also investigated, with a slight decrease in NO2 response observed at 40% RH.

Summary: Globally, there are successful municipal wastewater treatment technologies, but effluents from waste stabilization ponds often do not meet discharge limits. This study explores the potential of pumice rocks as treatment media for textile and municipal wastewater. The results show that pumice rocks effectively reduce BOD, COD, and color in wastewater.
