Depressive disorder is a common comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the presence of elevated levels of IL-18, TGF-beta, RANTES, and uPAR in COPD patients may indicate the potential occurrence of depressive disorder.
BackgroundDepressive disorder is a common comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); according to some studies, it occurs in approximately 80% of patients. The presence of depressive symptoms influences the quality of life and affects the course and treatment of this disease. The cause of depressive symptoms in COPD and the linking mechanism between COPD and depressive disorder have not been clearly elucidated, and more studies are warranted. Inflammation and inflammation-related processes and biomarkers are involved in the etiology of COPD and depressive disorder and may be an explanation for the potential occurrence of depressive disorder in patients diagnosed with COPD. The scope of this study was to measure and compare the profiles of IL-18, TGF-beta, RANTES, ICAM-1, and uPAR among stable COPD patients, recurrent depressive disorder (rDD) patients, and healthy controls.MethodsInflammation and inflammation-related factors were evaluated in COPD patients, patients diagnosed with depressive disorder, and control individuals using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.ResultsInterleukin (IL)-18, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta, chemokine RANTES, and urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) concentrations were higher in patients suffering from COPD and depression than in control patients. Intercellular adhesive molecule (ICAM)-1 levels were significantly higher in COPD patients and lower in depressive disorder patients than in controls.ConclusionsHigher levels of IL-18, TGF-beta, RANTES, and uPAR in patients with COPD might indicate the presence of depressive disorder and suggest the need for further evaluation of the mental state of these patients.

Can chronotype and social jet lag predict burnout among physical therapists?

Lukasz Mokros, Jacek Koprowicz, Piotr Leszczynski, Katarzyna Nowakowska-Domagala, Andrzej Witusik, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: This study found that both chronotype and social jetlag may be useful predictors of certain aspects of burnout among physical therapists. Both chronotype and social jetlag should be considered together.

The association between chronotype and suicidality among students of the medicine and psychology faculties - the mediating role of general mental health indices

Lukasz Mokros, Katarzyna Nowakowska-Domagala, Jacek Koprowicz, Andrzej Witusik, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: This study found that somatic symptoms, anxiety/insomnia, and depressive symptoms fully mediate the relationship between chronotype and suicidality among students of the faculties of Medicine and Psychology, while social dysfunction, although associated with eveningness and suicidality, did not play a mediating role.

Diabetes mellitus in patients using psychotropic medications: How does it work?

Marcin Kosmalski, Monika Rozycka-Kosmalska, Joanna Sikora, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is not a single disease, but a group of diseases characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and risk of tissue and organ damage. The development of diabetes may be due to disorders of insulin secretion or its effects. Certain psychotropic medications can lead to a specific type of diabetes, and there is a bi-directional relationship between diabetes and psychiatric disorders.

Evening chronotype as a bipolar feature among patients with major depressive disorder: the results of a pilot factor analysis

Lukasz Mokros, Katarzyna Nowakowska-Domagala, Andrzej Witusik, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: The aim of this study was to confirm the relationship between the severity of depressive symptoms, bipolar features, chronotype, and sleep quality among patients with major depressive disorder. The results showed that evening chronotype is related to bipolarity, independent of its link to depressive symptoms and sleep quality.

Lonely in the City-Sociodemographic Status and Somatic Morbidities as Predictors of Loneliness and Depression among Seniors-Preliminary Results

Kasper Sipowicz, Marlena Podlecka, Lukasz Mokros, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: The study found that elderly city residents had higher average levels of loneliness and depression, with living alone being the strongest predictor of both feelings. Sociodemographic status and somatic morbidities were significant factors in predicting loneliness and depressiveness scores in the elderly population.

Feelings of loneliness and meaning in life in subjects with Asperger's syndrome: a pilot study

Kasper Sipowicz, Tadeusz Pietras, Marcin Kosmalski

Summary: Individuals with Asperger's syndrome without intellectual disabilities struggle to establish social relationships, leading to depression. This study investigates the correlation between loneliness, meaning in life dimensions, and depression severity among individuals with Asperger's syndrome and compares them with those without the syndrome and with healthy subjects. It is found that those with Asperger's syndrome and depression experience higher levels of loneliness and lower sense of meaning in life compared to other groups. Depression and Asperger's syndrome are associated with increased loneliness and reduced meaning in life.

The ventral capsule and ventral striatum-Stereotactic targets for the management of treatment-resistant depression. A systematic literature review

Michal Sobstyl, Marek Prokopienko, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: Deep brain stimulation is an experimental treatment for psychiatric disorders. Stimulating structures in the brain's reward circuit, such as the ventral striatum, may have antidepressant effects. Current studies suggest that the ventral striatum and visual cortex are promising targets for deep brain stimulation.

Deiodinase Types 1 and 3 and Proinflammatory Cytokine Values May Discriminate Depressive Disorder Patients from Healthy Controls

Elzbieta Malujlo-Balcerska, Tadeusz Pietras

Summary: This study evaluated the expression levels of certain molecules in patients with depressive disorders and controls. The results showed decreased expression of DIO2 and increased expression of IL1B, IL6, and TNFA in patients. Protein concentrations also showed corresponding changes. The AUC of IL-1 beta, IL-6, DIO1, and DIO3 proteins was >0.7, suggesting their potential as biomarkers for distinguishing patients with depressive disorders. Further studies are recommended to understand the exact role of these molecules.
