A stepwise approach to prescribing novel lipid-lowering medications

Hessam Kakavand, Maryam Aghakouchakzadeh, Ali Shahi, Salim S. Virani, Dave L. Dixon, Benjamin W. Van Tassell, Azita H. Talasaz

Summary: Dyslipidemia is a significant risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and traditional statin therapy may not be sufficient for all patients. Several new lipid lowering medications have been approved in recent years, but their global utilization remains limited. To assist clinicians in developing more effective lipid lowering treatment plans, this review proposes a practical stepwise approach that includes information on the efficacy, precautions, and monitoring parameters for each medication class.

Assessment and management of statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS): A clinical perspective from the National Lipid Association

Bruce A. Warden, John R. Guyton, Adrienne C. Kovacs, Jessica A. Durham, Laney K. Jones, Dave L. Dixon, Terry A. Jacobson, P. Barton Duell

Summary: Statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) are common and can lead to increased cardiovascular risk. The prevalence of SAMS ranges from 10% for all muscle symptoms related to statin use to 1-2% for pharmacological SAMS. SAMS may result from a combination of pharmacological and nonpharmacological effects, and addressing them is important for patient care.

Role of lipoprotein(a) in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: A review of current and emerging therapies

Ibrahim S. Alhomoud, Azita Talasaz, Anurag Mehta, Michael S. Kelly, Evan M. Sisson, John D. Bucheit, Roy Brown, Dave L. Dixon

Summary: Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is structurally similar to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) but contains glycoprotein apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)]. Due to its prothrombotic and proinflammatory properties, Lp(a) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and aortic valve stenosis. Lp(a) levels are genetically determined and are not greatly affected by diet and lifestyle interventions.

Teresa M. M. Salgado, Rotana M. M. Radwan, Erin Hickey Zacholski, Emily Mackler, Tonya M. M. Buffington, Kerri T. T. Musselman, William J. J. Irvin Jr, Jennifer M. M. Perkins, Trang N. N. Le, Dave L. L. Dixon, Karen B. B. Farris, Vanessa B. B. Sheppard, Resa M. M. Jones

Summary: The purpose of this study was to assess oncologists' responsibility, comfort, and knowledge in managing hyperglycemia in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The study found that oncologists expected endocrinologists/diabetologists and primary care physicians to manage hyperglycemia, and referred patients to them frequently. The biggest barriers identified were long wait times and patients' providers being outside of the oncologist's institution. New models that provide prompt and coordinated care are needed.
