Summary: Gambling has been recognized as a public health concern since the 1990s, with the rise of new forms of online gambling facilitated by information technologies. Online gambling has been legalized in countries like Spain, leading to higher than expected prevalence of gambling disorder, especially in the online gambling sector.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge on gene x environment (GxE) interactions related to the dopamine system in ADHD and its comorbid conditions. Studies mainly focused on candidate genes, including DRD4, DAT1, and MAOA, suggesting that variable number tandem repeats in these genes may mediate GxE interactions in ADHD and specific comorbid disorders. However, evidence for other polymorphisms is contradictory and less convincing. Lack of longitudinal studies testing the interaction between well-defined environmental factors and polygenic risk scores of the dopamine system as a whole is particularly notable.

Summary: ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that starts from childhood and lasts through adulthood. It has been historically considered as a male dominant disorder, but research now emphasizes that it also affects females equally. Studies reveal gender differences in ADHD prevalence and effects in adults, with males having a higher prevalence but females also experiencing significant impairment, particularly in social functioning, time perception, stress tackling, and mood disorder.

Summary: This study examined the comorbidity of bipolar disorder (BD) and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adult patients and its relationship with violent behavior. The results showed that 15.2% of the patients had comorbid ADHD according to the DIVA 2.0. The analysis showed a significant positive effect of the ASRS total score on the Violence Tendency Scale (VTS) and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) total score, as well as a significant positive effect of male gender and young age on the VTS and BPAQ total scores.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between ADHD symptoms, emotion regulation, and gambling disorder severity. The results revealed significant correlations between ADHD symptoms and gambling disorder severity, as well as emotion regulation and gambling disorder severity. The presence of ADHD symptoms was associated with greater severity of gambling disorder and emotional dysregulation.

Summary: Children with ADHD often experience emotional problems as well, which can lead to poorer outcomes. Understanding the genetic and environmental factors contributing to comorbidities could help prevent negative outcomes for these children. The study found that both familial and individual-specific risk factors were involved in the correlation between ADHD and depression, while familial factors primarily contributed to the correlation between ADHD and anxiety.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of a telephone intervention conducted by a Swedish state-owned gambling operator on problem gamblers. The survey results show that the majority of gamblers were satisfied with the intervention and perceived a decrease in their gambling behavior. Although some gamblers turned to other operators after the intervention, the number was limited.

Summary: This meta-analysis demonstrates a clear overlap between ADHD and BD, with shared genetic, neurobiological, and clinical factors. Personal history of ADHD increases the risk of BD, and individuals with BD also have an increased risk of ADHD. First-degree relatives of both disorders also have an increased risk of the other disorder. This highlights the importance of systematic screening for ADHD and BD.

Summary: This study compared different types of gamblers in Australia, including land-based-only gamblers, online-only gamblers, and mixed-mode gamblers. The results showed that mixed-mode gamblers had the highest gambling involvement, gambling problems, and gambling-related harm. Risk factors for problematic gambling included engaging in more gambling forms, being male, single, less educated, indigenous, and speaking a non-English language. Internet gambling was associated with higher problem gambling severity compared to land-based-only gambling.

Summary: This study provides the first national prevalence estimates of concerned significant others (CSOs) harmed by gambling in Australia. The findings indicate that emotional harm is the most commonly reported type of harm experienced by CSOs, and former partners report the most harm. Female CSOs are more likely to report more harm and being harmed by a partner or other family member, while male CSOs are harmed by non-family members.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often occur together in children. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of co-occurring ASD and ADHD and examine the associations with sociodemographic and household factors in the United States. The findings revealed certain factors associated with co-occurring ASD and ADHD, and suggested early screening and intervention for children suspected of having these disorders.

Summary: The potential link between bariatric surgery and gambling disorder (GD) has not been studied before, but observations suggest that patients undergoing bariatric surgery may develop GD. Obese, older adults, and women may be more susceptible to developing GD due to higher rates of somatic comorbidities. Further research is needed to understand the factors influencing the development of GD in patients undergoing bariatric surgery and to explore preventive measures.

Summary: This study found differences between patients with gambling disorder (GD) with and without self-reported ADHD symptoms in terms of psychopathology, personality, and treatment outcomes. Patients with self-reported ADHD symptoms were more severe in their GD and experienced more severe relapses following treatment. Therefore, more vigilant follow-up and interventions are needed for patients with this comorbidity.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment, aggression, and psychopathy in a sample of offenders. The results showed a consistent positive association between maltreatment and aggression, while psychopathy did not mediate this relationship. Psychopathy had a positive effect on aggressive behavior. The findings suggest the need for further research on the different subtypes of psychopathy in predicting aggressive behavior based on childhood maltreatment.
