Summary: In this study, the TOF-SIMS image analysis technology was used for the first time to detect Chinese herbal medicine. Taking Coptis rhizome as an example, the distribution of nine active compounds in the cross-section of Coptis rhizome was studied. The results showed that these compounds had different distribution patterns in the cross-section and their contents increased with the growth years.

Summary: This study aimed to detect and identify the bioactive components of different parts and regions of Z. nitidum using various techniques. The results showed that the compounds extracted from root bark and root wood were similar in type and quantity, but the former had substantially higher alkaloid content. The samples from Guangdong had higher alkaloid content compared to those from Guangxi Province. Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis effectively identified and evaluated samples from different regions based on alkaloids and other bioactive substances. These findings have important implications for the harvesting, usage, origin identification, quality evaluation, and sensible use of Z. nitidum resources.
