Summary: This study developed a suspect screening method based on industrial compounds with bioaccumulation potential. Results showed that SQDIA has a significantly lower false-positive rate compared to standard DIA. Through suspect screening and nontargeted screening, multiple pollutants were identified, with some compounds confirmed through standards and structural analysis.

Summary: Drugs of abuse testing is commonly used in clinical and forensic settings, with urine being the preferred specimen type but other emerging types include saliva, sweat, hair, and meconium. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-tandem-MS) has become the new gold standard for confirmatory drug testing due to its ability to analyze a wider range of analytes compared to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Technical advancements such as high-resolution mass spectrometry and miniature ambient ionization mass spectrometry have improved the speed and efficiency of drugs of abuse testing.

Summary: This study developed a method to simultaneously detect a dozen preservatives in pastry using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The preservatives showed good linearity within the range of 1.0-50 μg/mL, with detection limits of 0.04-2.00 mg/kg and quantification limits of 0.12-6.67 mg/kg. The method is suitable for the determination of 12 preservatives in pastry.

Summary: This research aimed to develop an effective method for detecting semivolatile earthy-musty odors without using conventional sample processing equipment. The method successfully isolated four substances in tap water using a combination of n-hexane liquid-liquid extraction and silica solid-phase extraction techniques. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used for identification, and the method showed good linearity, recovery, and relative standard deviation. The determined limits of detection and quantitation varied for the four substances. The implementation of this method for evaluating off-flavor chemicals in tap water produced satisfactory results.

Summary: A novel high-throughput methodological approach was developed for tracing compounds with radical scavenging and antimicrobial activities in brown seaweeds. Major components identified with these activities include stearidonic, eicosapentaenoic, and arachidonic acids. This method allows fast identification and quantification of bioactive compounds in multicomponent biological samples.

Summary: Stable isotope tracers are commonly used with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for enzyme activity and metabolic pathway studies. In this research, three commercially available instruments were used to analyze samples from a stable isotope labeling study on Rothia mucilaginosa metabolism. The study found that all three GC-MS instruments can be used for stable isotope tracing studies, with high-resolution GC-QTOF MS offering additional capabilities in identifying the chemical structures of unknown compounds.

Summary: This study identified and quantified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in fermented sea bass using gas chromatography-ion mobility mass spectrometry (GC-IMS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Aldehydes were found to be the principal contributors to the overall flavor of fermented sea bass, and several characteristic VOCs were identified. GC-IMS was demonstrated to rapidly detect VOCs, providing a theoretical basis for studying flavor formation in fermented sea bass.

Summary: A rapid and accurate method for detecting volatile components of corn was established using GC-IMS and GC-MS. The fingerprints of corns under different treatments were analyzed, and key flavor compounds were identified. The corns were classified into four categories, consistent with the results of sensory evaluation. Steamed, boiled, and fried corns were found to be more popular.
