This study aims to identify the significant factors that affect BIM return on investment (ROI), develop an integrated model for companies and examine the influence of intangible returning factors of BIM on the rate of BIM implementation.
Purpose The business benefits envisaged for BIM represent the main criteria for decision-making about BIM implementation - or shy away from BIM. Despite the significance, traditional evaluation techniques have difficulty to capture the true value of BIM from multiple levels and dimensions - as an effective evaluation method is supposed to. This study aims to identify the significant factors that affect BIM return on investment (ROI), develop an integrated model for companies and examine the influence of intangible returning factors of BIM on the rate of BIM implementation. Design/methodology/approach A cluster sampling technique was used; 92 questionnaires completed by Australian architecture, engineering and construction small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) provided the basis to identify and analyse the key measurable returning factors, value drivers and strategic benefits associated with BIM ROI. Findings Applying the PLS-SEM technique, findings reveal that a lack of reliable quantification methods for the ROI factors associated with BIM significantly affects the organisation's commitments to implement BIM. In essence, the failure to adequately identify and assess these benefits could result in the system not being appropriately implemented and supported by executive sponsors, who give priority to hard and tangible ROI measurements. Practical implications The outcome of this study would be of direct appeal to policymakers, industry professionals and the academic community alike, in providing data-informed insight into the intersection between the implementation of BIM and the concept of ROI. Findings would provide a springboard for further research into using ROI factors to increase BIM implementation. Though the findings are directly applicable and contextualised for Australia, they provide lessons and offer a blueprint for similar studies in other countries and settings. That is, regardless of the context, findings raise awareness and provide a point of reference for the quantification of intangible returning factors rather than the tangible returning factors, as one of the first studies in its kind. Originality/value The study provides original insight in drawing attention to an untapped area for research in BIM implementation, namely BIM ROI. Apart from raising awareness around BIM ROI, the study is novel in providing a quantified model that establishes the links and level of impacts of various factors associated with BIM ROI. Findings of this study, particularly add value to the body of knowledge related to the business implications associated with BIM implementation in the context of Australian SMEs, while providing lessons for other countries and settings.

Sustainable Project Governance: Scientometric Analysis and Emerging Trends

Lihong Zhang, Saeed Reza Mohandes, Jiawei Tong, Mohamed Abadi, Saeed Banihashemi, Binchao Deng

Summary: Although many studies have been conducted on sustainable project governance (SPG), there is currently a lack of a comprehensive review paper that scientifically analyzes the published materials and identifies the research gaps and future research directions. To address this knowledge gap, this study undertakes a bibliometric review and scientometric analysis of the relevant literature on sustainable governance. The findings highlight key clusters, such as environment and land use, and identify important topics like industry, transition management, property rights, and natural resources, which provide a solid foundation for further research and practice in SPG.

Summary: In this research, the strength of confined concrete was tested by examining the influence of fibre material, corner radius, and FRCM layer number. Experimental results were used to develop an empirical formula to estimate compressive strength of confined concrete. The proposed finite element method accurately predicted confined concrete compressive strength and nonlinear behavior.

Impact of energy conservation measures in residential buildings in very remote communities in Australia

Samuel Udom, Saeed Banihashemi, Charles Lemckert

Summary: This study investigates the impact of various energy conservation measures (ECMs) on the annual electricity consumption in a single level, two-bedroom residential building in an arid and remote area of Australia. Through modelling and simulation using DesignBuilder software, the study shows that implementing selected ECMs can reduce the building's annual energy consumption by up to 44% compared to the base model and measured data. These energy savings can help alleviate the cost-of-living pressure experienced by low-income households in very remote communities in Australia.

Extended reality (XR) technologies in the construction safety: systematic review and analysis

Mohammad Javad Zoleykani, Hamidreza Abbasianjahromi, Saeed Banihashemi, Seyed Amir Tabadkani, Aso Hajirasouli

Summary: This study examines the applications of extended reality (XR) technologies in construction safety through the perspective of the projects lifecycle. Results of the content analysis reveal that XR is mainly used in safety training and risk management, with virtual reality being the most commonly used tool. However, there is limited research on the application of augmented reality and mixed reality in safety training and risk management. This study proposes three future research directions, including safety regulations control and coordination during the construction phase, and safety reports in the operation phase.

Optimizing urban layouts through computational generative design: density distribution and shape optimization

Saba Fattahi Tabasi, Hamid Reza Rafizadeh, Ali Andaji Garmaroudi, Saeed Banihashemi

Summary: The distribution of density in an urban matrix is a significant issue affecting various aspects of urban living. Although research on achieving optimum density distribution has gained attention in the past decade, there is still a lack of a generative approach that allows for more freedom in planning and adaptability in different land blocks. To address this gap, this study proposes an adaptable approach for developing residential blocks based on pre-defined land size, shape, and performance objectives. Using a suite of applications including Grasshopper, Python, and Ladybug, a case study was conducted in a residential block in Tehran to increase view quality, visual privacy, and solar gain. The optimization process utilized a genetic algorithm and topology optimization technique. The results highlight the significance of this research as the developed alternatives are more efficient in improving view quality, visual privacy, and solar gain. This achievement expands the potential of applying this research in different case studies and with diverse design and development objectives to enhance building block plans.
