Summary: This study found through a systematic review and meta-analysis that the use of lithium in patients with Bipolar Disorder does not significantly lead to weight gain. Shorter treatment duration is associated with more pronounced weight gain. There were no significant differences in weight gain between lithium and placebo, but weight gain with lithium was lower compared to other active comparators.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the presentation of immune-related histological and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). The results showed that BD patients had abnormal MRI findings associated with inflammatory diseases and chronic inflammation. However, the generalizability of the study conclusions is limited due to heterogeneity in methods and results, as well as limitations in sample sizes. The qualitative synthesis revealed that the links between immune traits and functional or structural MRI alterations in BD point towards brain areas involved in affective and somatomotor processing, with a trend towards a negative correlation between peripheral inflammatory markers and brain region volume. Disentangling the complex relationship between the immune system and MRI alterations in BD may uncover mechanisms underlying symptom pathophysiology, potentially leading to quickly translatable diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic implications.

Summary: This systematic review on the impact of disease progression in the treatment of bipolar disorder patients found that efficacy decreases with clinical progression, supporting early intervention. However, tailored recommendations cannot be made based on disease stages currently, highlighting the need for further research.

Summary: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis that includes all eligible data and evaluates the effect of lithium on suicide, non-fatal suicidal behavior, and suicide attempts. The results suggest that evidence from randomized trials is inconclusive and does not support the idea that lithium prevents suicide or suicidal behavior.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify triggers of acute mood episodes in bipolar disorder (BD). The review found that pharmacotherapy, particularly the use of antidepressants, was the trigger with the strongest evidence for manic/hypomanic relapse. Other identified triggers for mania included brain stimulation, energy drinks, acetyl-lcarnitine, St. John's wort, seasonal changes, hormonal changes, and viral infections. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding triggers for depressive relapses in BD, highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Summary: The review and synthesis of existing literature on functional outcomes with ketamine/esketamine treatment in adults with treatment-resistant depression suggest mixed results across different functional measures, with improvements in general psychosocial functioning apparent. Future research is needed to explore the association between symptomatic improvement and functional improvement in TRD.

Summary: The antidepressant effects of memantine in bipolar depression are promising, with both experimental and clinical evidence supporting its efficacy. The presented case study demonstrates that memantine can be an effective and safe adjunct treatment for mood stabilization in bipolar depression. This suggests that memantine may offer a new approach for patients who do not respond well to traditional medications.

Summary: The study systematically reviewed the efficacy of lithium in different phases of Bipolar disorder, finding that it is effective in acute mania and maintenance treatment, either as monotherapy or in combination with other agents. However, its efficacy for acute bipolar depression requires combination with specific agents, and its efficacy in preventing depressive episodes remains unclear.

Summary: This mini-review highlights the contradiction between the positive therapeutic data of lithium and its decreased global usage. Lithium has been proven to be the best mood stabilizer in maintaining bipolar disorder, preventing manic and depressive recurrences. It is also promising in augmenting the treatment of resistant depression and has additional benefits such as antisuicidal, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, the decline in lithium usage in many countries can be attributed to the promotion of other mood stabilizers and concerns over its side effects. Efforts have been made to challenge the negative perception of lithium and optimize its long-term administration.

Summary: In patients with bipolar disorder, lower levels of the KYN metabolite KYNA were associated with worse cognitive functioning, particularly in processing speed, only in the bipolar depression group. The manic group exhibited deficits in all cognitive domains, while throughout the follow-up period, both patient groups had significantly lower KYNA levels compared to controls. Further large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the role of KYN metabolites in cognitive impairment in BD patients and potential therapeutic implications.

Summary: The cognitive dysmetria hypothesis suggests disrupted communication between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex in schizophrenia, leading to sensorimotor and cognitive symptoms. This study found that sensorimotor adaptation is reduced in schizophrenia patients compared to age-matched and elderly controls. Patients with schizophrenia showed impairments in both explicit and implicit components of sensorimotor adaptation learning.

Summary: This study presents the clinical management and analysis of four new cases of Mitchell-Riley syndrome (MRS), a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the RFX6 transcription factor gene. The study highlights the impact of these mutations on RFX6 function and discusses the multidisciplinary approach to treatment that has improved the prognosis for these patients. The findings suggest that further understanding of RFX6 function could lead to new therapeutic interventions for MRS.
