This study conducted qualitative empirical research through in-depth interviews with 35 respondents in China to investigate changes in individuals' online purchasing behaviors during the COVID-19 crisis. The study identified three overarching dimensions related to enhanced digital engagement, transformative capacity of digital technologies, and socio-economic adaptability during crises. These findings have important practical implications for crisis management capabilities of the retail ecosystem via digital technologies and four propositions were extracted for further research.
This study seeks to unravel the factors that have triggered changes in individuals' engagement with online consumption during the COVID-19 crisis and investigate the influence of digital technologies on the retail ecosystem during the lockdowns, as seen through the eyes of consumers. In doing so, a qualitative empirical research approach was adopted, and data was collected via in-depth interviews with 35 respondents during the COVID-19 lockdown in China. The study has delineated a systematic mapping of the retail ecosystem's reactions to the COVID-19 shock. Three overarching dimensions related to consumers' online purchasing behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic were identified: triggers of enhanced digital engagement, transformative capacity of digital technologies, and socio-economic adaptability during crises. The relevant themes underlying each aggregate dimension were further elaborated with evidence from the interviews. The study findings advance the extant literature on purchasing behavior and online retailing in times of crisis and offer important practical implications on improving crisis management capabilities of the retail ecosystem via digital technologies. As a final output, four propositions were extracted to serve for further research.

The affective impact of sightseeing bus tour experiences: using Affective Events Theory (AET) to examine length-of-stay and electronic word-of-mouth

Nikolaos Stylos, Enrique Bigne, Victoria Bellou

Summary: This study examines the key components and influences of positive affect and electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on tourist visits in Birmingham, United Kingdom and Valencia, Spain. The findings highlight the significant mediating role of affect in tourists' decision to extend their visits and share their sightseeing bus tour experiences through eWOM. The study also demonstrates the moderating role of past sightseeing experiences in these relationships. This research expands the application of Affective Events Theory (AET) in tourism management scholarship and provides practical implications for tourism destination management organizations (DMOs).

Home alone no more: How does the internet of things (IoT) enhance travellers' subjective well-being

Mengyun Hu, Eleonora Pantano, Nikolaos Stylos

Summary: Although the importance of IoT technologies and human well-being has been recognized, the impact of IoT technologies on travellers' subjective well-being (SWB) is limited in the information technology literature. This study aims to explore the factors and extent to which IoT technologies affect travellers' SWB during short-term trips. An integrated model was developed and empirically evaluated using survey data from 1028 British and 970 Chinese short-term travellers. The results show that the ease of travel has a positive indirect effect on consumers' SWB through perceived benefits in both groups, with a positive direct impact in the British group, but no significant relationship in the Chinese group.

Toward a theory of technology desirability: Blending task and feature fit with mutual values

Mustapha Cheikh-Ammar

Summary: This investigation proposes a theory of IT desirability to explain the human experience of IT in today's highly digitized world. The theory takes into account the actions that IT artifacts enable and the tasks that users want to perform, as well as the users' personal values and what the artifact represents for them. The concept of Person-IT Fit is introduced to conceptualize the match between a person's values and the spirit of an IT artifact. The study illustrates the connections between Person-IT Fit and IT Desirability, user behavior, and reasoned appraisals of IT through empirical studies.

SDG7 and renewable energy consumption: The influence of energy sources

Joao Estevao, Jose Dias Lopes

Summary: This study examines renewable energy consumption in the Eurozone from 2000 to 2019 using panel data analysis and the Driscoll-Kraay technique. The study confirms that GDP is inversely related to renewable energy consumption, while Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and energy imports are negatively associated with renewable energy consumption. Additionally, there is a direct correlation between R&D expenditure and renewable energy consumption. Comparing two models, the disaggregated data model shows a stronger association between renewable energy consumption and electricity production volumes differentiated by energy sources. This study highlights the importance of using disaggregated energy production data for understanding the renewable energy transition.
