This study examined nine patients with oocyte maturation arrest and identified nine pathogenic variants in five genes, including three novel variants. These findings expand the understanding of the gene variant spectrum and provide insights for genetic diagnosis and prediction of oocyte maturation arrest.
Background: Oocyte maturation arrest is a disease that produces immature oocytes and cannot be mature after culturing in vitro, which leads to female primary infertility. We aimed to summarize nine representative patients in our center to retrospectively analyze the genetic variants and clinical characteristics of oocyte maturation arrest. Methods: This study examined and analyzed nine families with oocyte maturation arrest. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) of the probands was performed to detect the pathogenic variants. Sanger sequencing verified the WES findings in patients and available parents. ExAC database was used to search the variant frequency. The variants were assessed by pathogenicity and conservational property prediction analysis and according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG). Phenotypes of oocytes were evaluated by a light microscopy, and the phenotype-genotype correlation was also evaluated. Results: Nine pathogenic variants in five genes were detected in nine patients, of which three were novel variants, including PATL2 [c.1374A > G (p. Ile458Met)] and [1289-1291del TCC (p. Leu430del)] and ZP2 [c.1543C > T (p. Pro515Ser)]. Nine variants were predicted to be pathogenic, resulting in different types of oocyte maturation arrest and clinical phenotypes. Conclusion: Three novel pathogenic variants were identified, enabling the expansion of the gene variant spectrum. The related pathogenic mutations of the PATL2, TUBB8, and ZP1 similar to 3 genes were highly suggestive of being causative of oocyte maturation arrest.

Chuanhui Hao, Yidong Liu, Hongmei Zheng, Xu-bao Sun

Summary: This paper studies a practical scheme to reduce mutual coupling interference (MCI) between two extremely adjacent multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna elements. By using special two-dimensional metamaterial units, the surface wave interference is successfully suppressed. The proposed scheme is validated through experimental and simulation results, which show that the MCI of the antenna array is effectively reduced and exhibits good performance at the interested frequencies.

Yidong Liu, Wenxuan Sun, Liting Ma, Rong Xu, Chunyu Yang, Ping Xu, Cuiqing Ma, Chao Gao

Summary: Given the intrinsic and potential resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to antibiotics, it is crucial to develop new therapeutic options for infections caused by this bacterium. Bacterial metabolic pathways are being explored as potential targets for new antibiotics. This study investigates the metabolic mechanisms of glycerol and its intermediate glycerol 3-phosphate (G3P) in P. aeruginosa PAO1. The results reveal the importance of G3P homeostasis for the growth and virulence factor production of P. aeruginosa PAO1. The enzyme GlpD, involved in G3P catabolism, is identified as a potential therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of P. aeruginosa infections.

An Estimated δ-Based Iterative Block Decision Feedback Equalization in SC-FDE System

Yidong Liu, Xihong Chen, Dizhe Yuan, Denghua Hu

Summary: This paper presents a novel nonlinear frequency domain equalization algorithm for SC-FDE systems. The algorithm improves the classical iterative block decision feedback equalization (IBDFE) algorithm by replacing ZF equalization with MMSE equalization and eliminating the iteration of the correlation factor. Delta estimation is also applied to improve equalization accuracy. Simulation results show that the performance of the novel algorithm is better or the complexity is lower than the IBDFE algorithm with similar complexity or performance.

Generalized Newton's rings with vortex beams

Jiadian Yan, Jun Yao, Yidong Liu, Yuanjie Yang

Summary: Newton's rings are interference patterns consisting of concentric rings, commonly observed in classic optics experiments. In this study, we demonstrate the generation of generalized Newton's rings using vortex beams. Unlike conventional Newton's rings, the generalized ones exhibit spiral arms instead of concentric rings, accompanied by fork-shaped dislocations. Notably, the number of spiral arms and dislocations corresponds to the topological charge of the incident vortex beams. Experimental results confirm our theoretical predictions. This novel interference pattern can be utilized for measuring the topological charge of vortex beams.
