Goal: Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease which is very common in the population and requires frequent clinical and pharmacological treatment. In the following, a study based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyzing saliva proteomic components in psoriatic patients against diabetic patients and a control group is presented. Clinical analysis showed a prominent amide II band, at around 1545 cm(-1), and the composition of the amide I band, at around 1647 cm(-1), allowing us to distinguish the infrared salivary signature of psoriatic and diabetic patients from the control group and even from patients with different kinds of psoriasis. Moreover, results highlighted existing differences in the secondary structure composition of proteins between psoriatic and diabetic patients as compared to the control group. In fact, the saliva spectra of the control group and that of the palmoplantar psoriatic patients differ from plaque psoriasis and diabetic patient spectra because of the absence of the amide II band and the presence of different secondary protein-structure conformations.

Application of P(VDF-TrFE) Glass Coating for Robust Harmonic Nanoparticles Characterization

Svitlana G. Ilchenko, Volodymyr V. Multian, Ruslan A. Lymarenko, Victor B. Taranenko, Salvatore A. Pullano, Antonino S. Fiorillo, Volodymyr Ya. Gayvoronsky

Summary: Polyvinylidene fluoride and its copolymers are widely used low-cost ferroelectric materials. The high biocompatibility, optical quality, chemical and mechanical durability of P(VDF-TrFE) make it attractive for designing effective coating layers for different diagnostic techniques. The nonlinear optical characterization of P(VDF-TrFE) coating films on a glass substrate showed advantages for multiphoton imaging and long-duration characterization of harmonic nanoparticles (HNPs) with improved analysis robustness by effectively protecting the glass surface.

Summary: This study aimed to assess satisfaction with social roles and physical function alterations in patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and identify associated characteristics. The results showed that these diseases have a negative impact on physical function and satisfaction with social roles. Gender and treatment were found to be independently associated factors.

From Euglycemia to Recent Onset of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Proof-of-Concept Study on Circulating microRNA Profiling Reveals Distinct, and Early microRNA Signatures

Marta Greco, Maria Mirabelli, Alessandro Salatino, Francesca Accattato, Vincenzo Aiello, Francesco S. Brunetti, Eusebio Chiefari, Salvatore A. Pullano, Antonino S. Fiorillo, Daniela P. Foti, Antonio Brunetti

Summary: This cross-sectional study aims to identify potential novel biomarkers for the early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by investigating the differential expression patterns of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and new-onset T2D. Out of the 372 analyzed miRNAs, 33 showed significantly different expression patterns in IFG and new-onset T2D patients compared to healthy controls. Nine miRNAs exhibited specific upregulation in new-onset T2D patients, suggesting their role as early biomarkers for progression from prediabetes to T2D.

Effects of Geometry on Performances of Optically Unobtrusive Zeolite-Based Electrodes

Venkata Deepa Kota, Salvatore Andrea Pullano, Antonino S. Fiorillo, Ifana Mahbub

Summary: Long-term monitoring of vital signs is crucial for evaluating sporadic cardiac dysfunctions, and optically unobtrusive electrodes offer advantages of high transparency and ubiquitous health data acquisition. The study found that electrodes fabricated with zeolite 4A degrees exhibited a higher Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and increasing the diameter and decreasing the thickness of the electrode contributed to the improvement of SNR.

Bioinspired Transducer and Second-Generation Voltage Conveyor for a SONAR System

Gianluca Barile, Salvatore A. Pullano, Antonino S. Fiorillo, Giuseppe Ferri

Summary: Ultrasonic transducers for in-air applications are limited by their narrow frequency band, but efforts have been made to overcome this limitation. The use of PVDF and VCII technology has been proposed to improve the transducers and electronic interfaces. Experimental results have shown that the transducers have interesting characteristics in terms of bandwidth and directionality, while the electronic interfaces provide a wide bandwidth even at higher gain levels.

Anti-Reflective Zeolite Coating for Implantable Bioelectronic Devices

Giuseppe Oliva, Maria Giovanna Bianco, Antonino S. Fiorillo, Salvatore A. Pullano

Summary: Since sunlight is a readily available and clean energy source, the development of solar cells and improving their efficiency is an important topic. One limiting factor of photovoltaic cells is light reflection, which can be reduced by using anti-reflective coatings. In this study, anti-reflective coatings were deposited on commercial PV cells using two different types of zeolites. The results showed enhanced fill factors and improved performance, especially in the bands relevant to implantable medical devices. The proposed technique offers a simple and reliable deposition method for improving the efficiency of solar cells.
