Summary: This study investigated the effects of BDE-209 on mouse liver and revealed that it leads to an imbalance of redox and promotes apoptosis with a mitochondria-dependent manner. BDE-209 induced changes in mitochondrial morphology and increased ER-mitochondrial contact. ER stress was involved in the apoptosis process, and there was overloaded mitochondrial Ca2+ in hepatocytes of BDE-209 treated mice.

Summary: This study used proteomic technology to investigate the effects of tributyltin (TBT) on HL7702 normal human liver cells. The results showed that low dose TBT induced unfolded protein response and endoplasmic reticulum stress, while high dose TBT activated autophagy and eventually led to apoptosis. These findings reveal novel pathways of TBT-induced hepatotoxicity.

Summary: Protein homeostasis is crucial for cell function, and disruption of the molecular mechanisms involved in this process may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. Autophagy disruption, oxidative stress, and ER stress are the main molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration, and they have synergistic effects on each other. Therefore, targeting the crosstalk between these pathways may play a critical role in healing neurodegenerative diseases.

Summary: Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is a major cause of acute liver failure. Recent research suggests that the epigenetic enzyme Utx plays a key role in APAP-induced liver injury by promoting the clearance of toxic metabolites and alleviating ER stress. Additionally, overexpression of Sult2a1 can reduce APAP overdose-induced liver injury.

Summary: This study found that BDE-209 induces liver tissue injury and disrupts glycolipid metabolism. It alters the expression of proteins related to the PKA/AMPK signaling pathway in the liver and cells. BDE-209 also causes hypermethylation of PRKACA-1, which is involved in regulating this pathway.

Summary: Although diet is considered a major source of exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs), dietary surveys of OPEs in China have been limited. A national survey conducted from 2016 to 2019 found that meat was the most contaminated food, with a contribution of 50% to the total intake. The intake of OPEs was higher in southern coastal provinces compared to northern inland provinces.

Summary: A novel and simple procedure was developed to simultaneously determine 14 OPEs and 6 diester metabolites in dairy products and human milk. The study found high detecting frequencies of OPEs and their metabolites in real samples, indicating the ubiquitous presence of these emerging pollutants in foods and the human body. The impact of the diester metabolites on population exposure must be included in exposure assessment.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of DBDPE on the cardiovascular system in male SD rats and explored the underlying mechanisms using AC16 cells. The results showed that DBDPE induced cardiomyocyte injury, fibrosis, and mitochondrial damage. DBDPE also altered the levels of key proteins and affected lipid metabolism. In AC16 cells, DBDPE activated multiple signaling pathways and induced apoptosis through the mitochondrial-mediated apoptotic pathway. The study also revealed the involvement of hypermethylation of the fat mass and obesity-associated gene in DBDPE-induced glycolipid metabolism disorder and myocardial dysfunction.

Summary: This study conducted the first global survey of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and their metabolites (mOPEs) in milk. The findings showed that both OPEs and mOPEs were prevalent in milk samples collected from different countries on five continents. The concentrations of OPEs and mOPEs in milk did not differ significantly among the continents. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of OPEs/mOPEs through milk consumption varied among countries, with higher intakes observed in European and American countries. The current OPE intake through milk consumption for global adult populations was below the reference dose, but it is premature to conclude that OPE intake does not pose health concerns, considering that OPEs can be sourced from multiple sources.

Summary: Based on the 6th China Total Diet Study, both legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were found in animal-derived foods across China. The levels and estimated dietary intakes (EDIs) of most BFRs showed a significant decrease compared to previous studies conducted from 2007 to 2011. Meat consumption was identified as the primary source of dietary BFR intake. However, daily dietary intakes of BFRs were still unable to cause significant health risks to the general population in China.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of thirteen OPFRs in breast milk samples collected from Beijing mothers in 2018, revealing China as one of the most affected regions by OPFRs. Personal characteristics of mothers were found to impact the levels of certain OPFRs in breast milk, with most nursing infants' daily OPFR intake not raising significant health concerns. However, two OPFRs, TPhP and EHDPP, were noted to have higher estimated daily intakes than corresponding reference doses, potentially posing health risks.
