The main factors affecting thermal comfort of convective terminals during the heating season have been extensively studied in recent years. This investigation aimed to analyze thermal comfort under typical settings and integrated control strategies. The study used a questionnaire, laboratory measurements, and artificial chamber simulations to examine the effects of draft, vertical temperature difference, and control strategies. The results showed that people were more tolerant of draft than vertical temperature differences and that perceived control significantly reduced discomfort. There were no significant differences between different control strategies, except for a long-term shutdown.
The main factors affecting field thermal comfort of convective terminals during the heating season have been widely studied in recent years. Since previous studies were conducted separately, this investigation aimed to analyze the thermal comfort under typical settings and integrated control strategies. A questionnaire, based on a field operation, was conducted to compare and find the main characteristics of different terminals. The contradiction of draft and vertical temperature difference and the continuous/intermittent feature control were the key factors investigated. The indoor environment distribution under different conditions was measured in laboratory cabins based on the different settings and control strategies of convective terminals. The thermal sensation vote (TSV) and thermal comfort vote (TCV) were conducted in an artificial chamber to show the characteristics of an indoor environment under different conditions. The results showed that people were more tolerant of drafting than vertical temperature differences (the TCV score decreased from 0.44 to 1.42 with different temperature non-uniformity and airspeed). In particular, the subjects' perceived control significantly reduced the risk of discomfort. In addition, there was no significant difference between the different control strategies, including continuous operation and intermittent operation, except for a long-term control shutdown. The TCV result was 0.48 in the on-off control with a 5-min shutdown, showing statistical significance in pairedsample t-tests (p < 0.05).

Buddhism and M&A performance: Evidence from China

Wen Shi, Xiaogang Bi

Summary: This research examines the impact of Buddhism on mergers & acquisitions (M&As) performance using data from 4622 M&A transactions of Chinese public firms between 2004 and 2018. The findings provide ample evidence that acquirers located in regions with a higher intensity of Buddhism achieve better short-term and long-term performance after the merger. Furthermore, the study reveals that state ownership plays a crucial role in mitigating this effect, and the value creation is driven by higher deal completion rates and fewer violation cases for acquiring firms. Finally, the study addresses the issue of endogeneity, and the results remain unchanged.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the emission characteristics of droplets around the mouth during dental treatments. The results showed that the peak mass fraction of droplets occurs within the size range of 20 μm to 100 μm, and droplets with a diameter less than 200 μm account for over 80% of the mass fraction. The dominant emission direction of droplets is towards the dummy's head and chest, forming an approximately cone shape.

Influence of talking behavior of infected patients and the associated exposure risk in a ventilated negative-pressure ward

Zhijian Liu, Zhe Han, Lina Hu, Chenxing Hu, Rui Rong

Summary: This study compared the effects of different respiratory behaviors on the distribution of aerosols in a ward and the risk of infection for healthcare workers using numerical simulation. It was found that talking in the ward significantly increased aerosol concentrations, particularly short periods of talking. Wards designed with side-supply ventilation had lower overall infection risk. Talking alternately between healthcare workers and patients slightly extended the impact time of aerosols.

Summary: Mixed-mode ventilation is a promising solution for achieving energy-efficient and comfortable indoor environments. This study found that occupants can thermally adapt when switching between natural ventilation (NV) and air-conditioning (AC) modes within the same day, with the adaptation process stabilizing between 35 to 45 minutes after the mode switch. These findings are important for optimizing thermal comfort in mixed-mode controls, considering the dynamic nature of thermal adaptation.

The reliability of models for converting formaldehyde emissions from wood-based materials to different environmental conditions

Tunga Salthammer

Summary: Monitoring the potential formaldehyde emission of wood-based materials through test chamber investigations has significantly contributed to reducing indoor formaldehyde concentrations. However, the different methodologies used in these procedures prevent direct result comparison. Empirical models for converting formaldehyde steady-state concentrations based on temperature, humidity, air change rate, and loading were developed in the 1970s and have been modified to accommodate the development of lower-emitting materials. Formaldehyde emissions from wood-based materials are complex and require nonlinear regression tools for mathematical analysis.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of reduced short-wavelength light on the hormone melatonin metabolite 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (u-sMEL) and examined the association between previous day's light exposure and u-sMEL. It was found that reducing short-wavelength light during the day did not change the concentration of u-sMEL. Personal photopic illuminance was positively correlated with u-sMEL in the reference week. The illuminance had a significant impact on u-sMEL, as shown by the evaluation of the mean of all three urine samples. However, this correlation was not found in the experimental week.
