Summary: Approximately 2% of the general population have underlying bleeding disorders, which can adversely affect adolescents and young adult women both physically and psychosocially. It is important to screen these individuals for bleeding disorders when they present with heavy menstrual bleeding, as it could be a sign of an underlying condition. Closing the diagnostic gap through comprehensive bleeding histories, laboratory evaluations, collaboration with hematologists, and the use of recommended tools and materials can lead to improved screening and earlier diagnosis, with far-reaching effects beyond just managing heavy menstrual bleeding.

Summary: Cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) morbidity and mortality conferences (MMCs) play a crucial role in improving the quality of CCL and educating cardiology trainees. However, there is currently no consensus on how to identify and select cases for review, conduct the conferences, and utilize the results to enhance CCL quality. This document from the American College of Cardiology's Interventional Section aims to clarify these issues and recommend best practices for CCL MMCs.

Summary: This study examined the association between FIB-4, a liver fibrosis marker, and postoperative mortality in a general surgical population. The results showed that FIB-4 >= 2.67 was significantly associated with intraoperative mortality, mortality during hospitalization, and mortality within 30 days of surgery. These findings suggest that FIB-4 could serve as a useful tool for preoperative evaluation and risk stratification in surgical patients.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of using ICBG and PTFI for one-level spondylodesis in thoracolumbar burst fractures, finding that PTFI resulted in better restoration of the spinal profile in long-term follow-up compared to ICBG. Additionally, PTFI may serve as a good alternative to autologous bone grafting, preventing donor site morbidities.

Summary: Radiosynovectomy (RS) is an effective treatment option for recurrent articular bleeds related to chronic hemophilia synovitis (CHS) that cannot be controlled with medication. It can be performed in adolescents and adults, but may require general anesthesia in children. RS is a cost-effective alternative to surgical synovectomy, and chemical synovectomy with rifampicin can be utilized in areas where radioactive materials are not easily available. In cases of RS and/or chemical synovectomy failure, arthroscopic synovectomy may be indicated.

Summary: An investigation into late-onset inhibitors in patients with hemophilia A and B aged >= 40 years found that prophylaxis may be beneficial in older patients with severe HA to maintain tolerance at a higher age. The study did not identify a second peak of inhibitor development in older patients with hemophilia.

Summary: Liver transplantation is the preferred treatment for liver failure and selected cases of malignancies. However, there is a shortage of organs, necessitating the use of prioritizing systems and expanding the donor pool. The use of marginal donors has shown improvement in transplantation outcomes, and the introduction of machine perfusion and better understanding and treatment of complications may also contribute to better results. However, the heterogeneity of behaviors among different centers makes result comparison difficult, highlighting the need for more expert consensus.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of the LACC Trial on treatment patterns and surgery-related morbidity in early-stage cervical cancer. The results showed a significant decrease in the proportion of minimally invasive surgeries after the publication of the trial, but the 90-day complications did not differ between the two periods.

Summary: Gene and protein sequence analysis revealed that zebrafish f9a and f9b are homologous to human F9, while f9l is similar to human F10. Knockdown and immunodepletion of f9a and Fixa prolonged partial thromboplastin time, while knockdown of f9l and Fixl prolonged multiple coagulation tests. Age-dependent increases in expression of these genes were observed, suggesting potential use of zebrafish model for studying factors involved in aging-related gene expression.

Summary: The study examined the Functional Movement Screening (FMS) performance in older adults aged 55 and above, finding associations between FMS scores and key health markers such as physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and metabolic indicators. These findings highlight the potential of FMS in predicting future health outcomes in older adults, emphasizing the importance of prospective studies in this population.

Summary: This study compared the rates of surgical site infection between patients receiving closed incision negative pressure therapy and standard surgical dressing after emergency laparotomy through propensity matched analysis. The results showed that closed incision negative pressure therapy was associated with a significant reduction in surgical site infection rates. However, there were no differences in other outcomes between the two groups.

Summary: The study found that factors such as age, comorbidity score, and disease stage were associated with increased postoperative mortality risk in breast cancer patients aged 70 and older. By creating a predictive nomogram, the risk of death within 90 days post-surgery can be estimated, aiding in surgical decision-making for older women with breast cancer.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to global transfusion medicine, with shortages in blood products and safety concerns being major issues. Measures have been taken to reduce the demand for blood products and encourage blood donation while minimizing the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Additionally, the role of plasma therapy in treating COVID-19 patients, especially in severe cases, has been proposed and research is ongoing to determine its efficacy.
