Apoptosis markers such as caspase activation, phosphatidyl serine externalization, mitochondrial membrane potential change, and DNA fragmentation are observable in human ejaculated spermatozoa. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in various forms of male infertility. Increased apoptosis may have adverse effects on sperm production.
Activation of caspase, externalization of phosphatidyl serine, change in the mitochondrial membrane potential, and DNA fragmentation are apoptosis markers found in human ejaculated spermatozoa. Also, reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a vital role in the different types of male infertility. In this review, data sources including Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and Science Direct were searched for publications with no particular time restriction to get a holistic and comprehensive view of the research. Apoptosis regulates the male germ cells, correct function and development from the early embryonic stages of gonadal differentiation to fertilization. In addition to maintaining a reasonable ratio between the Sertoli and germ cells, apoptosis is one of the well-known quality control mechanisms in the testis. Also, high ROS levels cause a heightened and dysregulated apoptotic response. Apoptosis is one of the well-known mechanisms of quality control in the testis. Nevertheless, increased apoptosis may have adverse effects on sperm production. Recent studies have shown that ROS and the consequent oxidative stress play a crucial role in apoptosis. This review aims to assimilate and summarize recent findings on the apoptosis in male reproduction and fertility. Also, this review discusses the update on the role of ROS in normal sperm function to guide future research in this area.

Summary: In this study, a new delivery system using electrospinning technique was developed to control P. operculella by incorporating Lippia citriodora essential oil into PVA nanofiber. The results showed that the nano-formulated essential oil was more toxic and the PVA-EO nanofibers were more durable compared to the pure essential oil. These novel systems could be used in integrated pest management programs for stored product pests.

The Schiff base hydrazine copper(II) complexes induce apoptosis by P53 overexpression and prevent cell migration through protease-independent pathways

Summary: Although chemotherapy has extended the life expectancy of cancer patients, the toxic side effects of chemotherapy are still a major challenge. Organometallic compounds, specifically Schiff base copper complexes, have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation anticancer drugs due to their unique anticancer activities. This study examined the anticancer mechanisms of two copper(II) complexes, binuclear complex-1 and mononuclear complex-2. The results showed that complex-1 exhibited higher cytotoxicity than complex-2. Both complexes induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, but complex-1 showed a stronger effect on cell cycle arrest at the sub-G0/G1 phase. Furthermore, gene expression analysis revealed that only complex-1 induced the expression of p53 while both complexes induced Bcl-2 overexpression. Interestingly, both complexes inhibited cell migration through protease-independent pathways. This study highlights the potential of Cu-containing complexes in preventing cancer cell migration and suggests their use in novel therapeutic approaches.
