The Fulu iron formation (IF) is an iron-rich unit in the Neoproterozoic glacial successions, South China. The major element data suggest that the iron sources of the Fulu IF are derived from binary mixing from hydrothermal and detrital loads. The Fulu IF is characterized by slightly positive Eu anomalies similar to other Neoproterozoic IFs, indicating that a high-temperature hydrothermal input may contribute little to Neoproterozoic IFs. A shift from non-existent to slightly negative Ce anomalies of the Fulu IF indicates that the IF precipitated across an iron chemocline separating a weakly oxic surface ocean from an oxygen-depleted deep ocean.

Cassiterite oxygen isotopes in magmatic-hydrothermal systems: in situ microanalysis, fractionation factor, and applications

Yang Li, Sheng He, Rong-Qing Zhang, Xian-Wu Bi, Lian-Jun Feng, Guo-Qiang Tang, Wen-Zhong Wang, Fang Huang, Xian-Hua Li

Summary: This study demonstrates that in situ oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite is a promising tool to refine sources of ore-forming fluids, and to decode hydrothermal dynamics controlling tin and tungsten mineralization. Oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite samples from six Sn(-W) deposits in China shows considerable variability in delta O-18 values, revealing a strong magmatic affinity with variable or low involvement of meteoric water in ore-forming fluids. This suggests a reevaluation of the role of meteoric water in Sn-W mineralization.

Changes in sulfur cycling in a large lake during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum and implications for lake deoxygenation

Xu Wang, Lianjun Feng, Fred J. Longstaffe, Zuoling Chen, Min Zhu, Hongwei Li, Linlin Cui, Guangpeng Du, Zhongli Ding

Summary: The study investigates the dynamic redox changes in a large lake in central China during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) using isotopic methods. Three major anoxic episodes were identified, likely caused by thermal stratification in the lake. The findings suggest that current global warming may lead to similar ecological stress in large lakes through enhanced nutrient fluxes and expansion of anoxic zones.

Intracellular silicification by early-branching magnetotactic bacteria

Jinhua Li, Peiyu Liu, Nicolas Menguy, Xingliang Zhang, Jian Wang, Karim Benzerara, Lianjun Feng, Lei Sun, Yue Zheng, Fanqi Meng, Lin Gu, Eric Leroy, Jialong Hao, Xuelei Chu, Yongxin Pan

Summary: Biosilicification, the process of forming biological structures composed of silica, is widely distributed among eukaryotes and plays a significant role in global biogeochemical cycles. Recent discoveries of silica transporter genes and silicon accumulation in bacteria suggest that prokaryotes, particularly in ancient times, may also have played a previously unrecognized role in the Si cycle. This study reports the identification of a magnetotactic bacterium that forms intracellular, amorphous silica globules, revealing intracellularly controlled silicification within prokaryotes and its potential influence on the biogeochemical Si cycle during early Earth history.

Commensal cow Roseburia reduces gut-dysbiosis-induced mastitis through inhibiting bacterial translocation by producing butyrate in mice

Caijun Zhao, Lijuan Bao, Min Qiu, Keyi Wu, Yihong Zhao, Lianjun Feng, Kaihe Xiang, Naisheng Zhang, Xiaoyu Hu

Summary: This study found that cows with mastitis had significant gut dysbiosis, characterized by enrichment of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and depletion of commensal bacteria. Fecal microbiota transplantation from cows with mastitis to mice induced mastitis and altered gut and mammary microbiota in mice. The commensal bacteria improved mastitis symptoms by producing butyrate, limiting bacterial translocation.

A fiber-enriched diet alleviates Staphylococcus aureus-induced mastitis by activating the HDAC3-mediated antimicrobial program in macrophages via butyrate production in mice

Caijun Zhao, Lijuan Bao, Yihong Zhao, Keyi Wu, Min Qiu, Lianjun Feng, Naisheng Zhang, Xiaoyu Hu, Yunhe Fu

Summary: This study found that consumption of a probiotic-rich diet can alleviate mastitis in mice and this effect is dependent on gut microbiota. It was also observed that the diet can activate host antimicrobial programs and reduce inflammation through inhibiting histone deacetylase 3. This research reveals the important role of gut microbiota and its metabolism in protecting against S. au infection and provides a basis for studying other infectious diseases.

Gut dysbiosis induces the development of mastitis through a reduction in host anti-inflammatory enzyme activity by endotoxemia

Caijun Zhao, Xiaoyu Hu, Lijuan Bao, Keyi Wu, Yihong Zhao, Kaihe Xiang, Shuang Li, Ying Wang, Min Qiu, Lianjun Feng, Xiangyue Meng, Naisheng Zhang, Yunhe Fu

Summary: This study reveals that ruminal dysbiosis can cause mastitis. Transplanting ruminal microbiota from cows with mastitis to mice induces mastitis symptoms and impairs intestinal barrier, leading to systemic inflammation. Regulating ruminal or gut microbiota is a potential strategy for mastitis prevention.

Sialic acid exacerbates gut dysbiosis-associated mastitis through the microbiota-gut-mammary axis by fueling gut microbiota disruption

Caijun Zhao, Xiaoyu Hu, Min Qiu, Lijuan Bao, Keyi Wu, Xiangyue Meng, Yihong Zhao, Lianjun Feng, Shiyu Duan, Yuhong He, Naisheng Zhang, Yunhe Fu

Summary: This study demonstrates that gut microbiota disturbance caused by metabolic abnormalities of gut microbiota is associated with the occurrence and development of mastitis. The underlying mechanism of how gut dysbiosis leads to mastitis pathogenesis remains unclear. Additionally, the regulation of commensal bacteria and gut metabolism may provide a potential strategy for mastitis intervention.

Dietary Tryptophan-Mediated Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation by the Gut Microbiota Alleviates Escherichia coli-Induced Endometritis in Mice

Caijun Zhao, Lijuan Bao, Min Qiu, Lianjun Feng, Luotong Chen, Zhuoyu Liu, Shiyu Duan, Yihong Zhao, Keyi Wu, Naisheng Zhang, Xiaoyu Hu, Yunhe Fu

Summary: The activation of intestinal microbiota-mediated AhR plays an important role in infection-induced inflammation, and can be regulated by dietary Trp and probiotics. The study found that AhR activation alleviated endometritis by repairing barrier function and inhibiting inflammatory responses, while inhibition of AhR aggravated the disease. Gut dysbiosis damaged AhR activation and exacerbated endometritis. Supplementation with dietary Trp and AhR ligands, as well as the use of probiotics, showed protective effects against endometritis. These findings provide potential strategies for intervention in infectious diseases and reproductive health by regulating gut microbiota and metabolism.
