The study investigated the effects of glutathione and trehalose on turkey semen quality during storage. Results showed that the 2 mM concentration of glutathione improved plasma membrane functionality and DNA integrity after storage for 72 h at 5 degrees C. Additionally, concentrations of 1 and 2 mM of glutathione increased spermatozoa motility and motion parameters in comparison to the control group.
Since turkey reproduction is mainly through artificial insemination, short-term preservation of turkey semen is one of the most important issues in turkey reproduction management. The present study investigates the effects of glutathione (GSH) and trehalose on lipid peroxidation degree and turkey semen quality while being stored at 5 degrees C for 72 h. To this end, semen samples were collected from 20 turkeys with a weekly frequency for 12 weeks. A glucose-based extender was used to dilute the pooled semen. It was divided into seven equal parts with varying levels of glutathione [0.5, 1 and 2 mM), trehalose [50, 75 and 100] and control [extender without antioxidant]. Subsequently, the divided semen samples were stored at 5 degrees C for 72 h. Several sperm parameters such as motility and motion parameters, plasma membrane integrity (PMI), plasma membrane functionality, DNA integrity, and oxidative parameters were assessed following storage for 0, 24, 48, and 72 h. The obtained results indicated an improvement in the plasma membrane functionality and DNA integrity, along with the percentages of PMI in GSH-2 mM group in comparison to the control group following storage at 5 degrees C for 72 h (P < 0.05). It is also notable that the 2 and 1 mM concentrations of GSH increased the spermatozoa motility and motion parameters in comparison to the control group, respectively (P < 0.05). The study results indicated that GSH-2, 1 mM and trehalose- 100 mM concentrations reduced lipid peroxidase levels and increased total antioxidant activity, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase in comparison to the control group (P < 0.05). Our study's data show that improvement of semen parameters and oxidative stress parameters of turkey semen can be improved by glutathione at 2 and 1 mM and trehalose at 75 mM while storing it 5 degrees C.

Behavioral, histopathological, and biochemical evaluations on the effects of cinnamaldehyde, naloxone, and their combination in morphine-induced cerebellar toxicity

Soraya Mahmoudi, Amir Abbas Farshid, Esmaeal Tamaddonfard, Mehdi Imani, Farahnaz Noroozinia

Summary: This study investigated the separate and combined effects of cinnamaldehyde and naloxone on the behavioral and histological outcomes induced by long-term morphine use. The results showed that cinnamaldehyde, naloxone, and their combination treatments improved the adverse effects of morphine, suggesting a neuroprotective effect through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, apoptotic, and opioid receptor interaction mechanisms.

Summary: The research investigated the effects of ethanol and methanol as desolvating agents at different temperatures on the fabrication of sunflower protein isolate (SnPI) nanoparticles, as well as the encapsulation efficiency of curcumin. Ethanol produced smaller and more uniform nanoparticles compared to methanol, with encapsulation efficiencies ranging from 39.1% to 95.4%. The release of curcumin from the nanoparticles exhibited a biphasic trend, with over 50% released in the first 2 hours due to the burst effect of the protein matrix.

Futurology and monitoring in the field of virology to deal with emerging diseases

Mohammadreza Baqerkhani, Ali Soleimanzadeh, Hadi E. G. Ghaleh, Mahdieh Farzanehpour

Summary: The changing climate and weather may contribute to changing behaviors between humans and animals, leading to zoonotic diseases. Multiple factors, including zoonotic diseases and viral genetics, contribute to the emergence of new infections. Tracing and controlling new diseases can be challenging due to mutations and their unknown effects on virulence. Preventing emerging diseases is crucial for preventing pandemics.

Natural Products/Bioactive Compounds as a Source of Anticancer Drugs

Syeda Tasmia Asma, Ulas Acaroz, Kalman Imre, Adriana Morar, Syed Rizwan Ali Shah, Syed Zajif Hussain, Damla Arslan-Acaroz, Hayri Demirbas, Zehra Hajrulai-Musliu, Fatih Ramazan Istanbullugil, Ali Soleimanzadeh, Dmitry Morozov, Kui Zhu, Viorel Herman, Abdelhanine Ayad, Christos Athanassiou, Sinan Ince

Summary: Cancer is a deadly disease that has seen a significant rise in mortality rates globally. The search for potent anticancer agents has led to a focus on natural sources for novel and effective drugs. Plants and microbial species, chosen based on their composition, ecology, phytochemical, and ethnopharmacological properties, have played a crucial role in producing effective anticancer agents. The clinical development of various plant-derived bioactive compounds against cancer, as well as the conjugation of natural compounds with anti-cancerous drugs, show promise in generating targeted treatment therapies. Awareness from pharmaceutical research studies in this field could lead to alternative drug development strategies that are economical, reliable, and safe to use.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cryopreservation and supplementation of Azeri water buffalo's semen with proline (Lp) and fulvic acid (FA). It aims to assess motility parameters, sperm viability, oxidative stress parameters, and DNA damage to determine the optimal concentrations of Lp and FA for buffalo semen cryopreservation. The results show that L-proline and fulvic acid supplementation can improve the quality parameters of post-thawed buffalo bull semen.

Tribulus terrestris aqueous extract supplementation effects on sperm characteristics and anti-oxidant status during chilled storage of canine semen

Mohammad Moein Sabzeie, Esmail Ayen, Ali Soleimanzadeh, Mustafa Numan Bucak

Summary: This study examined the potential advantages of adding 40.00 μg/mL Tribulus terrestris aqueous extract (TTAE) to canine chilled sperm stored at 3°C for three days. The results showed that after 48 and 72 hours of liquid storage, the group with a concentration of 40.00 μg/mL TTAE exhibited better motility and viability compared to the control group. Additionally, after 72 hours of storage, the group with 40.00 μg/mL TTAE had lower malondialdehyde levels and higher antioxidant capacity. Therefore, the study suggests that supplementing the semen extender with 40.00 μg/mL TTAE can improve semen parameters after 72 hours of storage at 4.00°C, leading to improved fertilization efficiency.
