Stiffness reduction of the rib cage to perform a minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair: biomechanical evaluation

Angel Gabriel Vega-Artiles, David Perez, Oscar Martel, Alberto Cuadrado, Alejandro Yaez

Summary: The study showed that transverse sternotomy significantly reduces the rib cage stiffness by 44% to 54%, while costal chondrotomies can reduce stiffness by 70%. Stress distribution in the rib cage was similar among different Haller index models, but maximum stress decreased by 36% with transverse sternotomy and 47% with costal chondrotomies.

Structure-Activity Relationship of N-Phenylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide Derivatives Designed as Forkhead Box M1 Inhibitors: The Effect of Electron-Withdrawing and Donating Substituents on the Phenyl Ring

Cesar Sebastian Huerta-Garcia, David J. Perez, Carlos A. Velazquez-Martinez, Seyed Amirhossein Tabatabaei Dakhili, Antonio Romo-Mancillas, Rafael Castillo, Alicia Hernandez-Campos

Summary: This study reports the synthesis, characterization, biological evaluation, and molecular-docking studies of 18 thieno[2,3-b]pyridines with a phenylacetamide moiety at position 2. The results show that compounds bearing a -CN group can decrease FOXM1 expression in breast cancer cells, and compounds 6 and 16 exhibit strong anti-proliferative activity.

Complexity analysis of heartbeat-related signals in brain MRI time series as a potential biomarker for ageing and cognitive performance

David Lopez Perez, Arun L. W. Bokde, Christian M. Kerskens

Summary: Aging affects brain structure and cognitive capabilities, but current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods are unable to accurately reflect cognitive decline. However, MRI signals may contain information about brain activity beyond commonly used signals. A study using a zero-spin echo (ZSE) weighted MRI sequence found that signals evoked by heartbeats (HES) have properties similar to electrophysiology. Comparing different age groups, the complexity of HES was found to decrease with age, and stability and chaoticity were particularly sensitive to age. Complexity measures were related to cognitive performance, indicating the potential use of HES for understanding brain dynamics.

Linking gene expression patterns and brain morphometry to trauma and symptom severity in patients with functional seizures

Johannes Jungilligens, Stoyan Popkirov, David L. Perez, Ibai Diez

Summary: Within stress-diathesis models, adverse life experiences increase the susceptibility to functional neurological symptoms through neuroplasticity effects. This study found that symptom severity was positively correlated with sexual trauma, emotional neglect, and threat to life experiences. Furthermore, lower gray matter volumes were associated with higher symptom severity, sexual trauma burden, and emotional neglect. The genes related to stress-related signaling and neurodevelopment were spatially correlated with these volumetric findings.

Lessons Learned in Outpatient Physical Therapy for Motor Functional Neurological Disorder

Julie Maggio, Kevin Kyle, Christopher D. Stephen, David L. Perez

Summary: This article summarizes the experiences of a physical therapist practicing in a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic and highlights the role of the biopsychosocial model and neuroscience constructs in physical therapy interventions. The importance of team-based care and the delivery of physical therapy through video telehealth services are also outlined.

Summary: Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a disabling long-term condition of unknown cause. The recent guideline from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) sparked controversy by recommending against graded exercise therapy (GET) and downgrading the importance of cognitive-behavioural therapy for recovery. The anomalies in evidence processing and interpretation by the NICE committee, such as creating a new definition, omitting data, and deviating from accepted practices, contributed to this controversy.
