Legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in animal-derived foods from China Total Diet Study (CTDS): Temporal trends, evidence of substitution, and dietary exposure assessment

Xuezhen Zhao, Bing Lyu, Lei Zhang, Jingguang Li, Yunfeng Zhao, Yongning Wu, Zhixiong Shi

Summary: Based on the 6th China Total Diet Study, both legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were found in animal-derived foods across China. The levels and estimated dietary intakes (EDIs) of most BFRs showed a significant decrease compared to previous studies conducted from 2007 to 2011. Meat consumption was identified as the primary source of dietary BFR intake. However, daily dietary intakes of BFRs were still unable to cause significant health risks to the general population in China.

Binding of Tetrabromobisphenol A and S to Human Serum Albumin Is Weakened by Coexisting Nanoplastics and Environmental Kosmotropes

Zongshan Zhao, Haimei Li, Jiaqiang Yao, Jing Lan, Yan Bao, Lining Zhao, Wansong Zong, Qing Zhang, Henner Hollert, Xingchen Zhao

Summary: This study investigated the effects of brominated flame retardant (BFR) binding and corona formation on polystyrene nanoplastics (PNs) using human serum albumin (HSA) as a model protein. HSA helped disperse PNs under physiological conditions but promoted aggregate formation in the presence of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and S (TBBPS). The aggregates became larger and had fewer electrostatic repulsion effects at pH 4. The effects of HSA and BFR binding varied due to structural differences of TBBPA and TBBPS.

Differential Characteristics of Waterborne Bacterial Pathogens and Virulence Factors between Suspended Particulate Matters and Aqueous Phase in the Pearl River and Pearl River Estuary

Ke Yuan, Lan Lin, Xiuqin Xie, Zhiqiang Zhao, Ligang Hu, Tiangang Luan, Baowei Chen

Summary: In this study, metagenomic approaches were used to analyze water samples collected from the Pearl River and Pearl River Estuary for the presence of pathogenic bacteria. A total of 71 putative pathogenic bacterial species were identified, with Bacteroidetes being the predominant phylum. The concentration of pathogenic bacteria ranged from 1.59 x 107 to 1.46 x 108 cells/L, with a decreasing trend from the Pearl River to the Pearl River Estuary. Pathogenic particle-attached bacteria accounted for a significant proportion of the total pathogenic bacteria, and various virulence factor genes were detected, with those related to bacterial adherence being the most abundant. This study highlights the importance of suspended particulate matters in the transport of pathogenic bacteria and suggests that particle-attached bacteria may contribute to potential health risks.

The Mechanism of Mori Folium and Eucommiae Cortex against Cyclophosphamide-Induced Immunosuppression Integrating Network Pharmacology, Molecular Docking, Molecular Dynamics Simulations, and Experimental Validation

Jinde Liu, Qiao Rong, Chunxiao Zhang, Ali Tariq, Lin Li, Yongning Wu, Feifei Sun, Michal Tomczyk

Summary: It has been reported that Mori Folium (MF) and Eucommiae Cortex (EC) exhibit pharmacological effects in the treatment of immunosuppression. This study aimed to explore the mechanism of action of MF and EC against immunosuppression using network pharmacology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and animal experiments. The results obtained from network pharmacology identified important components, hub targets, and signaling pathways involved in the treatment of immunosuppression. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations confirmed the stable binding of certain critical components to hub targets. Animal experiments also demonstrated the significant effect of MF and EC in treating immunosuppression. These findings suggest that MF and EC may have a multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway mode of action in treating immunosuppression.
