Summary: This study suggests that NLR on initial hospital admission blood tests may provide important prognostic information for cases of seropositive AE. High NLR was associated with higher odds of first line treatment failure, while increased MLR was not associated with any short or long-term outcome.

The Migraine-Anxiety Comorbidity Among Migraineurs: A Systematic Review

Leila Karimi, Tissa Wijeratne, Sheila Gillard Crewther, Andrew E. Evans, Deena Ebaid, Hanan Khalil

Summary: This systematic review included 8 studies and found a strong and consistent relationship between migraine and anxiety. The co-morbidity of co-occurrence for migraine and anxiety has an average OR of 2.33 and an average RR of 1.63. The major limitations were small sample sizes and a lack of adjusting of confounding factors.

Understanding Why Post-Stroke Depression May Be the Norm Rather Than the Exception: The Anatomical and Neuroinflammatory Correlates of Post-Stroke Depression

Tissa Wijeratne, Carmela Sales

Summary: The study analyzed the inflammatory basis of post-stroke depression, which results in cell death, persistent neuro-inflammation, and disrupted neuronal networks in mood-related brain regions. Furthermore, the anatomical structures related to post-stroke depression may involve complex circuitries in cortical and subcortical regions.

Happiness: A Novel Outcome Measure in Stroke?

Tissa Wijeratne, Carmela Sales, Chanith Wijeratne, Mihajlo Jakovljevic

Summary: Happiness as a novel outcome measure in clinical research for stroke patients, in addition to traditional measures, could provide valuable insights into the subjective enjoyment of life post-illness. Its formal inclusion in stroke care and rehabilitation could lead to more comprehensive assessments of patient well-being.

Othman, Tissa Wijeratne

Summary: This study aimed to investigate neurological manifestations in Egyptian patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection. The results showed that approximately 48.63% of patients experienced neurological events within the first two weeks of illness, with headaches and myalgias being the most commonly reported symptoms. Neurological syndromes such as stroke, encephalitis, transverse myelitis, and Guillain-Barre syndrome were also observed. Severity of acute COVID-19 illness and older age were identified as the main risk factors.

Cadence Feedback and Video-Based Engagement Improves Motivation and Performance during Pedalling in Stroke Patients

Mukesh Soni, Tissa Wijeratne, David Ackland

Summary: Video and music can distract stroke patients from physical discomfort and improve exercise adherence. This study aimed to investigate the influence of video-based engagement on the performance and motivation of pedalling in stroke patients. The results showed that stroke patients had smaller cadence deviation during video-based engagement and feedback pedalling. In healthy adults, feedback and video-based engagement significantly reduced cadence deviation.

The Effect of Real-Time Video-Based Engagement and Feedback during Pedaling on Cadence Control and Exercise Motivation: A Proof-of-Concept Study

Mukesh Soni, Tissa Wijeratne, David C. Ackland

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of video and music as attentional stimuli during exercise. Findings showed that real-time cadence control feedback and video engagement improved performance in pedaling tasks for healthy individuals. Feedback and engagement can increase enjoyment and adherence to pedaling exercise, which may be beneficial for stroke rehabilitation and exercise therapy.

Summary: This study provides high-resolution estimates of HIV burden in sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting substantial variations in HIV incidence and mortality both within and between countries. Most second-level administrative units are falling short of the targeted 75% reduction in new cases and deaths by 2020.
