Background The diffusing capacity, which measures gas-exchange, uses reference values based on data from American or European studies. There are currently no reference values of pulmonary diffusing capacity (TL) and its components, such as the conductance of the membrane (Dm) and capillary lung volume (Vc) for healthy North African children. Objectives We determined the prediction equations-reference values for TL, Dm, Vc and the alveolar volume (VA) in healthy Tunisian boys. Methods Values of Vc, Dm, TL, and VA were measured by the NO/CO transfer method, using a single breath maneuver in 118 Tunisian boys (8-14 years old) at rest. We performed linear regression analysis of the pulmonary parameters and independent variables, such as height, weight, and age. Results The reference equations for pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (TLCO) was 0.201 x weight (kg) + 8.979; for TL(NO)was 0.76 x height (cm)-24.383; for Dm was 0.388 x height (cm)- 12.555 and for VA was 0.34 x height (cm)-3.951. Vc increased significantly with weight (P < .05) but not with age (P > .05). Conclusions References norms for TL(CO)and TL for nitric oxide and its components in young Tunisian boys are similar to data from other countries. The prediction equations we developed can be extended to clinical practice in Tunisia and can be considered for use in neighboring North African countries.

Ayoub Saeidi, Farnaz Seifi-Ski-Shahr, Mohammad Soltani, Ali Daraei, Hossein Shirvani, Ismail Laher, Anthony C. Hackney, Kelly E. Johnson, Gholam Basati, Hassane Zouhal

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effects of different resistance training protocols on gremlin 1, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), cardiometabolic, and anthropometric measures in obese men. The results showed that circuit resistance training (CRT) and interval resistance training (IRT) had greater beneficial effects on gremlin 1, MIF, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk factors compared to traditional resistance training (TRT) protocol.

Resistance Band Exercise: An Effective Strategy to Reverse Cardiometabolic Disorders in Women With Osteosarcopenic Obesity

Ebrahim Banitalebi, Elahe Banitalebi, Majid Mardaniyan Ghahfarokhi, Mostafa Rahimi, Ismail Laher, Kade Davison

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of resistance elastic band exercises (REBEs) on cardiometabolic/obesity-related biomarkers in older females with osteosarcopenic obesity. A total of 63 patients aged 65-80 years with osteosarcopenic obesity and a body mass index exceeding 30 kg/m2 were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (REBE, n = 32) or a usual care group (n = 31). The experimental group completed a 12-week REBE program, three times a week and 60 min per session. Compared with the usual care group, the experimental group showed decreases in lipid accumulation product (p = .033), visceral adipose index (p = .001), triglyceride-glucose-body mass index (p = .034), and atherogenic index of plasma (p = .028). The findings highlight the importance of an REBE program in improving combined cardiometabolic/obesity-related indices in older women with osteosarcopenic obesity, especially for those who cannot tolerate or participate in more strenuous exercise programs.

Combined effects of high fat diet and exercise on autophagy in white adipose tissue of mice

Saeed Daneshyar, Gholamreza Tavoosidana, Mahdi Bahmani, Saeed Shokati Basir, Maryam Delfan, Ismail Laher, Ayoub Saeidi, Urs Granacher, Hassane Zouhal

Summary: This study aims to investigate the combined effects of high-fat diets and exercise training on autophagy in mouse white adipose tissue. The results show that both the high-fat diet and exercise training groups had increased levels of autophagy-related genes and proteins. The combination of high-fat diet and exercise enhances autophagosome formation and modulates lysosomal degradation in white adipose tissue.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Consumption Reduces Oxidative Stress and Markers of Muscle Damage after Combat Readiness Tests in Soldiers

Hossein Shirvani, Behzad Bazgir, Alireza Shamsoddini, Ayoub Saeidi, Seyed Morteza Tayebi, Kurt A. A. Escobar, Ismail Laher, Trisha A. A. VanDusseldorp, Katja Weiss, Beat Knechtle, Hassane Zouhal

Summary: This study investigated the effects of oregano supplementation on muscle damage, oxidative stress, and plasma antioxidant markers of soldiers performing military training. The results showed that oregano supplementation can reduce muscle damage and increase oxidative capacity. Therefore, supplementation with oregano may serve as a dietary strategy to increase preparedness and promote recovery in military recruits.

MOTS-c repairs myocardial damage by inhibiting the CCN1/ERK1/2/EGR1 pathway in diabetic rats

Manda Wang, Gangqiang Wang, Xiaoli Pang, Jiacheng Ma, Jinghan Yuan, Yanrong Pan, Yu Fu, Ismail Laher, Shunchang Li

Summary: Cardiac structure remodeling and dysfunction are common complications of diabetes, often leading to serious cardiovascular events. MOTS-c, a mitochondria-derived peptide, regulates metabolic homeostasis and improves vascular endothelial function, making it a novel therapeutic target for the cardiovascular complications of diabetes.

Endometriosis and physical activity: A narrative review

Claire Tourny, Amira Zouita, Samira El Kababi, Lea Feuillet, Ayoub Saeidi, Ismail Laher, Katja Weiss, Beat Knechtle, Hassane Zouhal

Summary: This article reviews the effects of physical activity on the management and quality of life in patients with endometriosis. The findings suggest that body awareness practices such as Hatha yoga and progressive muscle relaxation can reduce pain and stress and improve the quality of life associated with endometriosis. However, caution should be taken in considering patients' physical abilities and avoiding intense physical activities. More research is needed to explore nonmedicinal or surgical techniques for different forms of endometriosis and its symptoms.

Timing of Resistance Training During Ramadan Fasting and Its Effects on Muscle Strength and Hypertrophy

Raoua Triki, Hassane Zouhal, Hamdi Chtourou, Iyed Salhi, Nidhal Jebabli, Ayoub Saeidi, Ismail Laher, Anthony C. Hackney, Urs Granacher, Abderraouf Ben Abderrahman

Summary: This study investigated the effects of timing of resistance training (RT) during Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF) on muscle strength and hypertrophy in healthy male adults. The results suggest that practicing RT during RIF does not have adverse effects on muscle hypertrophy and strength, regardless of whether it is done in a fed or fasted state. However, RT has greater effects on muscle strength when done in a fed state. Therefore, training sessions during Ramadan should be scheduled after breaking the fast.

Summary: Maternal nutrition during pregnancy can have long-lasting effects on fetal development and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in later life. This review examines the impact of maternal diet on offspring vascular function, including the effects of maternal micronutrient intake, high-fat diets, caloric restriction, and low protein intake on endothelial function. The review also discusses study design differences, potential underlying mechanisms, and identifies areas for future research.
