Summary: Although plastic is widely used, the linear economy poses risks to human health. The circular plastic economy aims to reduce, reuse, and recycle all plastic across the value chain. Current literature focuses heavily on the end-of-life phase, neglecting other phases and highlighting challenges such as waste stream contamination and limitations on recycling and reusing plastic. Collaboration and systemic transparency are needed for a successful transition to a circular economy.

Summary: This paper reviews the current progress of recycling and reuse of waste silk, which is a result of the improvements in living standards and the throw away culture of mankind. The utilization of waste silk in various applications, such as energy, fabric, composites, skincare, biological tissue engineering, filtration, and electronics, is explored. The modification, optimization, and application of regenerated silk fibroin extracted from waste silk show great potential for industrialization and sustainable development. Furthermore, making waste silk functional and intelligently wearable provides two promising ways for recycling waste silk with low cost and high return value. The recovery and utilization of waste silk serve as a paradigm for valorization of other fiber-based waste materials.

Summary: The management of post-consumer plastic packaging waste in Flanders was analyzed using material flow analysis. The study found that the mass recovery rate increased from 0% in 1985 to 31% in 2019, and could be further increased depending on improvement scenarios. The calculation rules and differentiation of secondary applications had a significant impact on the mass recovery rate. Achieving the recycling target of 65% by 2023 will be challenging if strict calculation methods are followed and best-case collection scenarios are not implemented. Clear calculation rules and a harmonized monitoring system are necessary for harmonizing targets.

Summary: Chemical recycling of MMPW is a feasible method to reduce plastic waste and recover energy products, especially liquid. Pyrolysis at 550 degrees C can produce high-grade plastic oil with a yield of 69.8 wt%. Engine tests showed that increasing the proportion of plastic oil in diesel fuel increased cylinder pressure and net heat release rate, but decreased brake thermal efficiency. Emissions such as CO, HC, and NOx were higher for plastic oil blends, while CO2 and smoke opacity were reduced compared to reference diesel.
