Blockchain as the trust-building machine for supply chain management

Kongmanas Yavaprabhas, Mehrdokht Pournader, Stefan Seuring

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of blockchain application on trust levels in supply chains by reviewing relevant literature. The study finds that blockchain implementation involves three pairs of trustors and trustees, and it is likely to enhance cognition-based and institution-based trust. Blockchain technology can facilitate swift trust-building between unknown supply chain partners. However, there are contradicting assertions among scholars regarding the implications of blockchain for trust in supply chains.

Managing a portfolio of environmental projects: Focus, balance, and environmental management capabilities

Xun Tong, Kevin Linderman, Qinghua Zhu

Summary: This research examines the impact of a firm's environmental project portfolio on its ability to improve environmental outcomes efficiently. The findings suggest that reducing heterogeneity in the types of environmental projects in a firm's portfolio can lead to more efficient environmental improvement. However, introducing diversity in the portfolio without negatively impacting outcomes is also important. The study also highlights the importance of balancing socially oriented projects with technically oriented projects in managing portfolio diversity.

The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Managing Supply Chains in Base-of-the-Pyramid Markets

Lara Schilling, Stefan Seuring

Summary: This article analyzes the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in reducing transaction costs and improving supply chain management (SCM) in the agricultural sector. The study finds that ICT enables the base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) market to improve its SCM activities. Three different ICT models are identified, with TC reductions serving as explanations and theoretical foundations. Future research should further evaluate the application of ICTs and validate the proposed framework.

A Delphi study examining risk and uncertainty management in circular supply chains

Felipe Alexandre De Lima, Stefan Seuring

Summary: Circular supply chains have been recognized for their contribution to increasing materials' circularity, but little attention has been given to managing risks and uncertainties in these chains. This study uses contingency theory to identify the hurdles faced in implementing circular supply chains and proposes strategies to mitigate them. A Delphi study involving industry, governmental, non-governmental, and academic experts from 18 countries was conducted to analyze their views on risk and uncertainty management. The findings reveal risks and uncertainties at various levels and suggest countermeasures such as collaboration, circular product design, information sharing, flexibility, and financial risk management. The study also identifies contingency factors affecting circular supply chains, including regulatory requirements.

Efficacy of supply chain relationships - differences in performance appraisals between buyers and suppliers

Chen Qian, Paul A. A. Dion, Ralf Wagner, Stefan Seuring

Summary: This paper examines the impact of trust, commitment, and relationship specific investment (RSI) on firms' cooperation, innovation, and financial performance in the Chinese business market. The study collected data from 101 business buyers and 108 suppliers in mainland China. The results show that the effectiveness of these relationship factors differs between buyers and suppliers. Trust and RSI directly affect buyers' cooperation performance, while commitment is the immediate precursor of suppliers' cooperation performance. Trust and commitment lead to buyer's innovation performance directly, while RSI is a direct driver of supplier's innovation performance. These findings provide important insights for relationship management in the Chinese business market.

Heterogeneity in corporate green supply chain practice adoption: Insights from institutional fields

Yuan Chen, Qinghua Zhu, Joseph Sarkis

Summary: This study explores the heterogeneity in green supply chain management (GSCM) practice adoption by considering different firm characteristics using institutional field theory. The results show the existence of four organizational groupings-brown, light brown, light green, and green-firms among 394 firms operating in China. Multinomial logistic regression analysis reveals that larger firms and firms in the electronics industry are more likely to adopt greener practices, indicating the significant role of firm size and industry in discriminating GSCM practice adoption. Interestingly, there are no differences between domestic and foreign-owned firms, suggesting the disappearing gaps in institutional perspectives between Chinese domestic and non-domestic ownership.

Examining the impact of market power discrepancy between supply chain partners on firm financial performance

Jing Gu, Xinyu Shi, Junyao Wang, Xun Xu

Summary: The asymmetric market power between a firm and its partners negatively affects the firm's financial performance. Building relationships with suppliers or customers that have matched market power is the best approach. The strength of the buyer-supplier relationship amplifies the negative impact of asymmetric market power, while the level of relationship embeddedness reduces its negative effect. Moreover, firm-specific institutional, industry, and regional economic heterogeneities also influence the financial impact of asymmetric market power.

Learning efficient in-store picking strategies to reduce customer encounters in omnichannel retail

Fabio Neves-Moreira, Pedro Amorim

Summary: Omnichannel retailers are using stores as distribution centers to provide faster online order fulfillment services. However, in-store picking operations can impact the offline customer experience.
