Phthalates are used as additives and plasticisers in packaging for personal care and food products. Several investigations reported the harmful impact of phthalates on human health. In this study, different types of olive oils (12 olive oil; 20 extra virgin oil; 4 refined pomace oil) in different packaging materials [polyethylene terephthalate (PET), glass and metal] obtained from local markets in Turkey in 2019, were analysed using GC-MS for the presence of benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP). The average recoveries of the 5 phthalates in olive oils were 87%-100%, with limits of quantification (LOQs) of 0.09-2.28 mg/kg. DEHP was the abundant phthalate in all olive oil samples ranging from below the LOQ (0.23 mg/kg) to 602 mg/kg. In all analysed samples, the levels of DINP and DIDP were less than their LOQ, thus these phthalates were not detected. The highest DEHP content was found in an olive oil sample containing 602 mg/kg, whilst 5 samples did not contain detectable phthalate esters.

Impact of Anthropogenic Threats on Species Diversity: A Case Study of the Sub-Himalayan Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests of Pakistan

Naveed Alam, Eve Bohnett, Muhammad Zafar, Hassan Sher, Bilal Ahmad, Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan, Mushtaq Ahmad, Zahid Ullah, Ahmad Ali, Shujaul Mulk Khan, Kashmala Syed

Summary: Effective forest conservation and management requires considering ecological factors and the susceptibility of different tree species to human activities. A phytosociological survey was conducted to assess the significance of Pakistan's tropical dry deciduous forests in relation to ecological variables and anthropogenic threats. The study revealed 140 species of woody plants belonging to 52 families, with the Dodonaea viscosa-Acacia modesta-Dulbergia sissoo community being the most dominant. Altitude, precipitation, and temperature were identified as key factors influencing the distribution and composition of these forests. Immediate management intervention and a conservation strategy are recommended for areas with high levels of human threats, along with effective management of grazing and fuelwood collection.

Cannabis sativa leaf essential oil fractions and bioactive compounds: chemistry, functionality and health-enhancing traits

Saima Naz, Waseem Ahmed, Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan

Summary: Cannabis sativa leaf essential oil (CSEO) and its fractions (CSF) were examined for fungicidal, bactericidal, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties. CSEO was extracted at different temperatures, and the maximum extraction yield was obtained at 110 degrees C. The main components identified in CSEO were caryophyllene, humulene, trans-alpha-bergamotene, and cis-beta-farnesene. The fractionation of CSEO was carried out using vacuum fractionation, and the total phenolic, flavonoid, and pro-anthocyanidin contents were determined. CSEO exhibited antioxidant activity and showed antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxic effects.

Capsaicin Rich Low-Fat Salad Dressing: Improvement of Rheological and Sensory Properties and Emulsion and Oxidative Stability

Esra Avci, Zeynep Hazal Tekin-Cakmak, Muhammed Ozgolet, Salih Karasu, Muhammed Zahid Kasapoglu, Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan, Osman Sagdic

Summary: This study investigated the use of cold-pressed hot pepper seed oil by-product (HPOB) in low-fat salad dressing to improve its rheological properties, emulsion stability, and oxidative stability. The emulsions enriched with HPOB showed shear-thinning, viscoelastic solid-like behavior, and high emulsion stability. The salad dressing samples containing HPOB exhibited higher oxidative stability and lower formation of volatile oxidative compounds. The findings suggest that HPOB can effectively enhance the rheological characteristics and oxidative stability of low-fat salad dressing.

Asmaa E. Mohammed, Laila R. Abdalhalim, Khaled Mohamed Atalla, Adel Abdelrazek Abdelazim Mohdaly, Mohamed Fawzy Ramadan, Yasser Fathy Abdelaliem

Summary: Nano-chitosan and nano-sodium alginate were prepared and tested for their morphology and effects against pathogens and microorganisms using transmission electron microscopy. Nano-chitosan showed the highest antibacterial and antifungal activities, while sodium alginate nanoparticles treated with 2% acetic acid exhibited stronger antimicrobial impact. The minimum inhibitory and lethal concentrations of nano-chitosan and nano-sodium alginate were determined for different bacteria strains. The edible coating of nano-sodium alginate showed the highest reduction in yeast and fungi in Ras cheese. These findings suggest that chitosan and sodium alginate nanoparticles' edible coating could be promising for food preservation.
