Summary: This research proposed and demonstrated a strategy for reinforcing carbonaceous structures to improve the fire retardancy of intumescent polybutylene succinate (PBS) using the concept of intumescence. The incorporation of zinc borate (ZnB) and intumescent additives significantly reduced the heat release rate, promoted the formation of a protective char, and extended the flameout time. Solid-state NMR analysis confirmed the strengthening of the char through the formation of borophosphate and other phosphate glasses.
