Summary: Ensuring material provenance is a promising solution to material fraudulence in the construction industry. However, current logistics and supply chain strategies hinder provenance tracing due to intermediaries and low technologies. This research develops a deployable framework for material provenance tracing by applying cross-sectoral learning, design science research, and IoT and blockchain technology. The framework includes four interconnected layers - business layer, IoT layer, blockchain layer, and application layer - to facilitate the management of quality, safety, payment, logistics, and sustainability. A pilot construction project in Hong Kong is used to illustrate and refine the framework, which shows great prospects but also faces challenges requiring future research, such as regulations, scalability, and information leakage risks.
