Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass generated as a by-product in industrial processes and other biomasses grown in industry waste waters like Spirulina platensis and Rubrivivax gelatinous can be used in aquafeed, thus reducing the costs of discard and minimizing environmental damage. In this study, 840 male Nile tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus; 26.8 +/- 1.03 g average weight) were distributed among 21 tanks (40 fish/tank, 1.07 kg/m(3)). Fish were fed to satiation three times a day throughout the trial (72 days). A completely randomized design experiment with 7 treatments (control group and 6 different diets, 3 replicates per treatment) was conducted to investigate the effects of these three microbial biomasses (added at 0.25 and 0.5% into an isoproteic/isoenergetic tilapia diet) on the growth and visceral indexes of the fish and on the composition and texture of the fillets. Feed conversion ratio was significantly lower in fish fed 0.5% R. gelatinosus than that in the control group, but no difference was detected among the treatments either for the other growth indicators or for the organs' indexes. Including microbial biomass in the diet did not significantly affect either fillet pH or texture parameters. However, the use of microbial biomass increased the protein content and decreased the n-6/n-3 ratio of the fillets compared with that of the control group. So, it was concluded that the dietary intake of low concentrations of S. cerevisiae, S. platensis and R. gelatinosus biomasses did not affect the growth performance of tilapias, increased the nutritional quality and preserved the texture features of the fillets.

Long-Distance Transport of Finisher Pigs in the Iberian Peninsula: Effects of Season on Thermal and Enthalpy Conditions, Welfare Indicators and Meat pH

Genaro C. Miranda-de la Lama, Ruben Bermejo-Poza, Nora Formoso-Rafferty, Malcolm Mitchell, Pilar Barreiro, Morris Villarroel

Summary: Long-distance transport in the global swine industry can adversely affect pigs, with winter journeys causing more stress response and impacts on meat pH due to abrupt variations in air temperature change and enthalpy rates. Developing new environmental control strategies to mitigate these effects is important to reduce the biological cost of long-distance transport on animals.

Effects of Randomly Fired Underwater Currents as an Occupational Enrichment Program in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Morris Villarroel, Genaro C. de la Lama, Ruben Bermejo-Poza, Concepcion Perez, Elisabet Gonzalez-de Chavarri, Fernando Torrent, Jesus De la Fuente

Summary: Occupational enrichment (OE) aims to introduce variations in tank water to allow fish to exercise as they would in the wild. Two trials were conducted to test the effects of randomly fired underwater currents (RFC) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in tanks, with results suggesting that this method can reduce stress levels and provide biologically meaningful environmental enrichment for the fish.

Fish Welfare in Urban Aquaponics: Effects of Fertilizer for Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) on Some Physiological Stress Indicators in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.)

Morris Villarroel, Genaro C. Miranda-de la Lama, Rafael Escobar-Alvarez, Ruben Moratiel

Summary: This study examined the effect of adding commercial fertilizer to small aquaponic systems on fish stress levels. The results showed that the addition of fertilizer did not significantly affect fish production and stress indicators, but had a positive impact on lettuce growth.

Beef steer performance on African Bermuda grass pasture overseeded with black oat and annual ryegrass: effects of added irrigation and temperate legumes

Jefferson Felipe Cavazzana, Wagner Paris, Marcos Luis Molinete, Alexandre Augusto Auache Filho, Olmar Antonio Denardin Costa, Adalberto Luiz de Paula, Fabiana Matielo de Paula, Luis Fernando Glasenapp de Menezes

Summary: Increasing productivity and resource efficiency in grazing systems require addressing new challenges related to crops and livestock. The degradation of ecosystem services, such as reduced biodiversity and pollution, threatens the sustainability of global agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of irrigation and forage legumes on beef cattle performance in grazing systems. Results showed that irrigation led to higher stocking rates and live weight gain per area, particularly in water-restricted periods. Additionally, the inclusion of forage legumes resulted in higher average daily gain in the summer and improved overall pasture performance over three years. These findings highlight the potential benefits of integrating irrigation and forage legumes to enhance grazing system sustainability.

Miguel Garrido-Izard, Eva C. Correa, Jose M. Requejo, Morris Villarroel, Belen Diezma

Summary: This study used various methods to cleanse the data from an electronic feeding station on a commercial farm, and identified and categorized typical errors through detailed analysis of the mass curves of each animal. Feed efficiency was calculated after filtering the raw data, resulting in improved estimation of feeding efficiencies for individual animals.

Animal Protection in Filming in the Context of Spain

Pablo De Damborenea Martin, Ruben Bermejo-Poza, Jesus De la Fuente-Vazquez

Summary: Animals have made fundamental contributions to the development of cinematographic and audiovisual activities. The EU recognizes the importance of animal welfare in its policies, but lacks standardized norms. In contrast, countries like the UK and USA have specific laws for animal use in film media. Therefore, new standards are necessary to protect animals in audiovisual productions in the EU and extend to other sectors related to working animals.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of dietary fruit industrial by-products on the health and oxidative status of tilapias, as well as the composition and lipid peroxidation of their fillets. The results showed that the fruit by-product diets improved the health and oxidative status of the fish and increased the lipid content in their fillets. Additionally, the onset of lipid peroxidation during frozen storage was delayed.

Effects of Fasting on Intermediary Metabolism Enzymes in the Liver and Muscle of Rainbow Trout

Montserrat Fernandez-Muela, Ruben Bermejo-Poza, Almudena Cabezas, Concepcion Perez, Elisabet Gonzalez de Chavarri, Maria Teresa Diaz, Fernando Torrent, Morris Villarroel, Jesus de la Fuente

Summary: Fish can experience periods of feed deprivation due to natural causes or management techniques in animal production. This study analyzed the effects of different fasting durations on rainbow trout's energy metabolism by studying metabolic enzymes in muscle and liver. Results showed increased activity of glycolytic enzymes in the early fasting phase, while enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis increased their activity as fasting days progressed. After 20 days of fasting, lipogenic and protein related enzyme activity depletion was observed, leading to significant changes in energy metabolism. Thus, prolonged fasting with high degree days duration can compromise the energy supply for rainbow trout's development.
